A forum of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served between 2017 and 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has formally declared their unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, Ebenezer Doku, former Municipal Chief Executive for Adenta, emphasized that the endorsement follows a period of broad consultation, critical analysis of aspirants, and in-depth reflection on the future leadership of the NPP.

With the party’s presidential primaries officially slated for January 31, 2026, Mr Doku said the timing of their public declaration is strategic and aimed at guiding the grassroots in making an informed and united choice.

According to Mr Doku, the group’s decision is based on the firm conviction that Dr. Bawumia represents the best hope for the NPP—not just in terms of securing electoral victory, but also in sustaining the party’s legacy of progress and development.

“Following extensive consultation with all aspirants and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s future, we are convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the most qualified and prepared candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections”.

The group, known as the Forum for Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, comprises seasoned local government administrators, most of whom have had direct and long-standing engagements with party structures at the grassroots level.

Mr Doku highlighted that 95% of the 220 former MMDCEs have previously served as either regional or constituency executives, some for more than sixteen years—experience that they now intend to leverage in building massive support for Bawumia across the country.

“Our endorsement is not symbolic; It is a full strategic and operational commitment. We are not only pledging our votes but also our time, resources, and energies to mobilise, to campaign, and to ensure that Dr. Bawumia’s vision reaches every corner of Ghana”.

Denial of Kennedy Agyapong’s Endorsement

The forum further dismissed recent claims suggesting that Kennedy Agyapong, another prominent aspirant in the upcoming primaries, had received the endorsement of over 250 former MMDCEs.

Mr Doku described such reports as “completely false” and asserted that the overwhelming majority of those who served as MMDCEs during the last NPP administration have now publicly declared their support for Dr. Bawumia.

“We wish to state for the record that such claims are unfounded. As a body that reflects the operational and organizational heart of the NPP at the local level, our declaration here today represents the true pulse of the party’s grassroots.

“We have now publicly and unequivocally endorsed Dr. Bawumia, and we encourage all NPP faithful to rally behind him”.

Beyond loyalty to the party, the forum’s endorsement also signals a deep belief in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to lead a modern, inclusive, and forward-looking campaign.

Mr Doku emphasized that the former Vice President embodies a rare combination of strategic vision, political discipline, and technical expertise that is essential for uniting the party and appealing to a broader spectrum of voters ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“Dr. Bawumia has proven his commitment to the party over the years, demonstrated clear policy leadership as Vice President, and continues to inspire hope in many Ghanaians who desire a pragmatic and inclusive leader. He is well-positioned to reenergize the NPP and broaden our support base”.

The former MMDCEs also underscored their readiness to embark on a nationwide campaign in support of Dr Bawumia, using their extensive networks and understanding of local political dynamics to shore up support.

According to Mr Doku, the forum has already begun planning strategic engagements with regional and constituency executives to reinforce Bawumia’s message of unity, transformation, and continuity.
