Ghana is hosting His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini, who is on a four-day state visit aimed at strengthening the longstanding diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two African nations.

The visit is seen as a strategic move to bolster regional cooperation and enhance opportunities for intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.

President John Dramani Mahama welcomed the monarch with warmth and goodwill, highlighting the importance of his presence and the symbolic significance of the visit.

Speaking during a formal interaction, President Mahama hinted at the spiritual and cultural dimensions of King Mswati III’s agenda in Ghana.

“I just saw the King of Asante, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, off to Kumasi; he was here yesterday. He left to go and prepare to receive you. So I’m sure you’re gonna have quite an interesting visit to the Asante Kingdom.”

King Mswati III, known for his keen interest in pan-African integration and economic advancement, reaffirmed his commitment to reinforcing the fraternal ties between Ghana and Eswatini.

Addressing the gathering, he stressed the shared values and cultural commonalities that bind the two nations together.

“We are here to strengthen the cooperation and the ties between our two countries. We are looking forward to seeing the people of this country and to exchanging a lot of information”.

Cultural Identity

He pointed out that both Ghana and Eswatini, like many African nations, have much in common in terms of cultural identity and social lifestyle.  “We can share a lot. A lot of ideas could be developed,” he remarked

A focal point of King Mswati III’s remarks was the urgent need to expand intra-African trade, particularly in light of the promises of the AfCFTA, which seeks to create a single market for goods and services across the continent.

“Trade, of course, goes amongst other things, as the African Continental Free Trade Area is trying to promote trade within Africa. Let’s trade more with African countries, because if you look at trade within Africa, you can see that it is very limited.”

King Mswati III,

The Eswatini monarch called for a deliberate shift in strategy to correct the imbalance in African trade patterns.

“It is high time we really turn around that situation and make Africa trade more with one another,” he said, adding that his delegation was in Ghana to explore concrete business opportunities and identify sectors where Eswatini and Ghana can collaborate.

He emphasized that robust infrastructure is vital for facilitating trade and underscored the need to invest in systems that can boost economic cooperation across borders.

High-Level Discussions

King Mswati III’s visit is not only expected to deepen diplomatic relations but also to initiate high-level discussions on tourism, education, health, and cultural exchanges.

A highlight of his visit will be a ceremonial stop in the Ashanti Region, where he will meet with the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Asante Kingdom, known for its rich history, cultural sophistication, and enduring traditions, represents a critical link in the cultural diplomacy Ghana hopes to strengthen with Eswatini.

Ghana and Eswatini have enjoyed cordial relations over the years, but both leaders appear eager to elevate the partnership into new realms of cooperation that prioritize trade, youth development, and cultural diplomacy.

King Mswati III’s emphasis on practical engagement—particularly on trade and economic ties—signals a shift from symbolic diplomacy to action-oriented partnerships that deliver shared benefits to citizens of both nations.
