The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso, Hon. Dr. Stephen Amoah, has projected Kennedy Agyapong as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) most formidable candidate for the 2028 elections, despite affirming the competence of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Hon. Dr. Amoah, who previously served as Deputy Finance Minister, credited the Akufo-Addo administration, under which Dr. Bawumia chaired the Economic Management Team, for Ghana’s economic progress in recent years.

He emphasised that Dr. Bawumia had proven himself as a capable leader but insisted that winning elections in Ghana extends beyond performance in government.

“I don’t think I have questioned the competence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia before. Never. My issue is about the high probability of the NPP winning or losing the election in 2028. It is not about competence”

The Nhyiaeso legislator highlighted that Ghana’s electoral outcomes are shaped by multiple forces, including regional voting patterns and broader political alignments. “Winning an election in Ghana doesn’t depend only on performance,” he said, arguing that there are factors that often outweigh strict assessments of governmental performance.

“They correlate with different degrees, and most of them do not necessarily mean you have performed well or not. We have geographical voting,” he noted, stressing that his analysis pointed to Mr. Agyapong as the stronger choice.

According to him, while Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated competence, Kennedy Agyapong’s grassroots appeal gives the party a greater probability of retaining power in 2028.

A Destined Leader

Hon. Dr. Amoah described Mr. Agyapong as the “Joshua” destined to lead the NPP to victory. He underscored the former Assin Central legislator’s influence among polling station executives and constituency coordinators, portraying him as a candidate whose strength is rooted in the base of the party.

“When Ken Agyapong contested the last time, he did not have government machinery supporting him. I didn’t see any one MP publicly campaigning and supporting Kennedy Agyapong. Even in the Ashanti Region, I didn’t see one constituency with even two executives publicly working for him, but he had 37.4%”

He went on to stress that the situation has shifted considerably since that time. He noted that the aspirant currently had over 67% of the total coordinators in the entirety of the Ashanti Region publicly working for him.

“He has a lot of MPs supporting him, and the polling station agents and coordinators who form about 80% of those going to vote, Kennedy Agyapong is the most popular among them”

The Nhyiaeso MP reiterated that Mr. Agyapong’s wide popularity and strong personality positions him as the best hope for the NPP to secure electoral victory in 2028. He maintained that the support Mr. Agyapong now enjoys across the country was unmatched, and would come in handy in every contest to the presidency.

“It does not mean other candidates cannot win, but on the scale of probability… Ecclesiastes says there is a time for everything – this time is about Kennedy,” Hon. Dr. Amoah declared.

Through his remarks, Hon. Dr. Amoah situated the NPP’s electoral chances not only in the performance of past administrations but also in the power of mobilisation, popularity, and symbolism within the party’s ranks.

His portrayal of Kennedy Agyapong as “Joshua” leading the party to the “promised land” reflects his conviction that 2028 could hinge on a candidate’s ability to galvanise support from the ground up.
