The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail by an Accra court in the sum of GH¢50,000 with one surety, without justification.

The ruling, delivered on Monday, September 15, 2025, comes after a week of legal battles and widespread public discussions over his arrest and initial denial of bail.

Abronye’s lead counsel, Daniel Mantey Addo, confirmed that the bail ruling has come as a major relief to both his client and his family. He disclosed that Abronye’s health had deteriorated during his remand, making the court’s decision an even more welcome development.

“The news of his bail has eased a lot of tension, particularly given his current health condition. We are taking immediate steps to meet the bail conditions to secure his release”.

The granting of bail was facilitated by the Attorney General’s Office following days of public outcry over the earlier decision by the trial judge of the Accra Circuit Court to deny Abronye bail on Friday, September 12, 2025.

That ruling had sparked criticism from legal commentators, human rights advocates, and even figures within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), who considered the decision inconsistent with the principles of justice and human rights protections.

Under Ghana’s legal system, while the Ghana Police Service can lead prosecutions on behalf of the state in some criminal issues, the Attorney General’s Office retains the overriding authority to intervene or take over any state prosecution when deemed necessary.

By stepping into Abronye’s case, the Attorney General effectively rebalanced the scales of justice in what has become a politically charged trial. The move underscores the administration of President John Dramani Mahama’s stated commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.

Bipartisan Attention

The case has attracted unusual levels of bipartisan attention, given Abronye’s status as a vocal opposition figure. Despite his long record of sharp political commentary against the ruling party, some prominent NDC leaders publicly questioned the trial court’s decision to deny him bail.

Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the earlier ruling as untenable.

Similarly, Hamza S. Suhuyini, another prominent NDC voice, argued that the denial of bail ran counter to democratic norms and defied any legal logic.

Their comments were widely interpreted as evidence of the government’s determination to protect fundamental rights even when it involves political opponents.

Abronye’s legal troubles stem from statements he made on September 8, 2025, which led to his arrest on charges of “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace.”

According to the police, the arrest was prompted by comments Abronye made in the media, including allegations leveled against the Inspector General of Police and the ruling political party.

The authorities regarded the remarks as potentially inflammatory, arguing that they could endanger public order and undermine institutional trust.

Since his arrest, the case has ignited heated debates about the boundaries of free speech, the responsibilities of political leaders, and the balance between state security and human rights.

Supporters of Abronye have maintained that his arrest reflects an attempt to silence dissent, while others argue that his style of political communication has often crossed the line into recklessness and must be checked to preserve national peace.

The Attorney General’s intervention, however, has shifted the tone of the discourse. By ensuring that Abronye was granted bail, the state has reassured both domestic and international observers that Ghana remains committed to the rule of law and the protection of civil liberties.

With his legal team working swiftly to finalize the bail process, Abronye DC is expected to regain his freedom in the coming hours. His next court appearance will likely draw significant public attention, as both his supporters and critics await how the case unfolds.
