A total of 63 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have officially declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the party into the 2026 presidential election.

The endorsement, described as voluntary and transparent, was announced at a press conference in Parliament House by the Member of Parliament for Mampong, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, who addressed journalists on behalf of the group.

Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong, who also served as Ghana’s former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, said the MPs’ decision reflects strong confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, integrity, and capacity to reposition the NPP following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He revealed that in addition to the 63 MPs who have openly endorsed Dr. Bawumia, two others have also committed their support but preferred not to have their names published for personal reasons. “That brings the total to 65 MPs,” he stated.

“We are the team of MPs supporting Dr. Bawumia for the NPP 2026 presidential primaries scheduled for January 31. All these persons whose names have been mentioned voluntarily signed, and no one was pressured, and no one’s name was invented. Every single one of the MPs mentioned is with us on this journey.”

He added that to promote transparency and prevent any misinformation, the full list of MPs backing Dr. Bawumia would be made public. “To avoid mischief, these names will be fully published,” he said, stressing that every endorsement was made in good faith and out of conviction.

The Mampong MP explained that the group’s support for Dr. Bawumia is grounded in a belief that he remains the most experienced and visionary leader to guide the NPP back to power in 2028.

“The MPs you see on this list are standing voluntarily for what they believe is best for our party’s future and for Ghana,” he emphasized, adding that the former Vice President’s record of dedication and policy innovation makes him the natural choice to rebuild the party.

An analysis of the list shows that Dr. Bawumia’s backing in Parliament cuts across several regions, with his strongest support base in the Ashanti and Eastern regions — traditional NPP strongholds. In the Ashanti Region alone, 28 MPs have aligned themselves with his flagbearership campaign.

Prominent among them are Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie (Effiduase-Asokore), Kofi Amankwa-Manu (Atwima Kwanwoma), Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi (Asante Akyem Central), Francis Asenso-Boakye (Bantama), and Prof. Kingsley Nyarko (Kwadaso). Other MPs from the region include Mavis Nkansah-Boadu (Afigya Sekyere East), Dr. Patrick Boakye-Yiadom (Obuasi East), and Akwasi Konadu (Manhyia North).

Also joining the Ashanti bloc are John Darko (Suame), Kofi Obiri Yeboah (Subin), Michael Aidoo (Oforikrom), and Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah (Offinso North). Collectively, this group forms the largest regional endorsement cluster for Dr. Bawumia’s 2026 flagbearership bid.

The Eastern Region also recorded significant support, with at least 15 MPs publicly backing Dr. Bawumia. Among them are the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase-Ayirebi), Sammy Awuku (Akwapim North), and Michael Okyere Baafi (New Juaben South).

Others include Dr. Kingsley Agyeman (Abuakwa South), and Alexander Akwasi Acquah (Oda). According to Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong, their endorsement underscores a strong belief in Bawumia’s ability to reconnect the party with its base and restore voter confidence.

Other regional endorsements came from across the country. In Ahafo and Bono, the MPs include Gideon Boako (Tano North), Col. (rtd) Kwadwo Damoah (Jaman South), and Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah (Techiman South).

The Central Region’s representatives include Rev. John Ntim Fordjour (Assin South) and Rudolf Amoako-Gyampah (Upper Denkyira West). From the Western Region, Dr. Bawumia has secured the backing of Kwabena Okyere Mensah-Darko (Takoradi) and Isaac Yaw Boamah Nyarko (Effia).

Home Support

The Northern Region also features prominently, with Dominic Nitiwul (Bimbilla), Adam Mohammed Amin (Karaga), Iddrisu Habib (Tolon), Sulemana Alhassan Tampuli (Gushegu), and Matthew Nyindam (Kpandai) all lending their support.

Unsurprisingly, the North East Region — Dr. Bawumia’s home base — produced some of his staunchest parliamentary allies, including Mustapha Ussif (Yagaba-Kubori), Mahama Tia Abdul-Kabiru (Walewale), and Mumuni Muhammed Nurideen (Nalerigu-Gambaga).

In the Savannah Region, the former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor (Damongo), has also thrown his weight behind the former Vice President.

From the Greater Accra Region, MPs such as Gloria Owusu (Trobu) and Emmanuel Tobbin (Anyaa Sowutuom) have joined the growing list of backers, signaling that Dr. Bawumia’s appeal extends well beyond regional boundaries.

Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong reiterated that the MPs’ collective mission is to ensure that Dr. Bawumia wins the NPP flagbearer contest and leads the party’s renewal efforts after the 2024 electoral defeat. He also stressed that the public declaration was meant to clear the air about where parliamentary support lies and to dispel speculation about internal divisions.

With 65 MPs backing his bid, Dr. Bawumia’s campaign appears to be gathering significant momentum ahead of the January 31, 2026, NPP presidential primaries. The show of support from across regions demonstrates his enduring influence within the party despite the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

As the party seeks to reorganize and rebuild its base, the former Vice President’s allies in Parliament are framing him as the figure best positioned to reconnect with the grassroots, unify the rank and file, and lead the NPP into a competitive comeback in 2028.
