The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has taken swift action by shutting down a Chinese-owned warehouse in the Ashanti Region for its alleged involvement in the illegal fabrication and storage of “Chanfan” machines.

The operation led by the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Professor Nana Ama Klutse uncovered notorious equipment linked to the devastation of water bodies and farmlands through “galamsey”, the illegal mining activities.

The enforcement operation targeted the FEI FUCAI warehouse located in Anwia Nkwantah, where EPA officials discovered “hundreds of Chanfan components and other mining accessories” concealed under the guise of an automobile spare parts business.

“The company has been operating under the guise of selling spare parts, but investigations revealed it was actively fabricating Chanfan machines.”

This, according to EPA, directly contravenes the government’s recent ban on the importation, use, and fabrication of these machines.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has been at the forefront of the nation’s efforts to combat the activities of illegal mining, which has inflicted catastrophic environmental and socioeconomic harm on the country.

By leading this enforcement operation and collaborating with other key agencies, the EPA is demonstrating its continued dedication  to protecting and preserving the country’s natural resources thereby upholding the law in the face of illicit activities.

The closure of the FEI FUCAI warehouse and other recent efforts, demonstrates that the Authority is shift from just government’s approach to tackling the galamsey crisis in the country.

The Authority also assured that the fight against illegal mining will now extend beyond field operations to target logistical suppliers and financiers who sustain the illicit trade.

This holistic approach aims to disrupt the entire supply chain that enables and perpetuates the illegal mining activities, ensuring that offenders are held accountable regardless of their position or role in the illicit network.

The EPA’s enforcement action was carried out in close coordination with the police, the Minerals Commission, and the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining.

This collaborative effort demonstrates the government’s unified stance against the galamsey menace and the recognition that a multifaceted approach is necessary to effectively address this complex challenge.

The shutdown of the FEI FUCAI warehouse is a response to the government’s recent declaration banning the importation, use, and fabrication of Chanfan machines in the country without authorization.

These machines are widely identified as a primary driver of environmental degradation and water pollution caused by illegal mining activities.

By targeting the supply and manufacturing of these machines, the EPA is taking decisive steps to enforce the ban and disrupt the galamsey operations that rely on this destructive equipment.

Deterring Further Illegal Activities

The EPA’s swift action in shutting down the Chinese-owned warehouse sends a clear message that the government will not tolerate any attempts to circumvent the law or undermine its efforts to combat illegal mining.

By holding offenders accountable, regardless of their nationality or economic status, the EPA intends to deter others from engaging in similar illicit activities and strengthen the overall fight against the menace of galamsey.

The EPA has vowed to continue its collaborative efforts with other agencies to ensure compliance with the ban on Chanfan machines and to pursue further enforcement actions against individuals and entities involved in the galamsey supply chain.

This unwavering commitment to tackling the root causes of the problem, rather than just the symptoms, underscores the government’s determination to protect Ghana’s natural resources and secure a sustainable future for its citizens.

The shutdown of the FEI FUCAI warehouse is a significant step in government’s battle against illegal mining.

By targeting the logistical and financial enablers of galamsey, the EPA is demonstrating its resolve to dismantle the entire ecosystem that sustains this environmental scourge.

While the nation continues to dwindle with the devastating consequences of illegal mining, this operation deepens the government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural heritage and the well-being of its people.
