Ghana’s insurance industry has entered a new era of transformation with the bold rebranding of Metropolitan Insurance to emPLE Life.
Announced at a news conference, the transition marks a strategic shift aimed at deepening accessibility, amplifying digital innovation, and expanding insurance penetration, particularly among Ghana’s vast informal sector.
With nearly 80 percent of the workforce operating outside the formal structure, the rebrand positions emPLE Life as a technology-led powerhouse ready to disrupt traditional insurance models and build a more inclusive financial protection system.
The move from Metropolitan Insurance to emPLE Life is not merely a name change but a reset of the company’s mission and operational approach. For decades, Metropolitan carved out a respected presence in pensions, life, and health insurance.
Now, under the emPLE brand, the company is embracing a more modern and customer-centered future. CEO and Country Head, Dr. Rafique Daudi, emphasized that the new direction is anchored in technology as a vehicle for simplification and accessibility.
According to him, the company’s renewed focus revolves around optimizing “everything about our company, our business, our products and services” through technology. He stressed that the informal sector represents a massive untapped opportunity and that emPLE Life is determined to play a bridging role. Drawing parallels with Ghana’s highly successful mobile money revolution, Dr. Daudi explained how technology will mediate access, foster trust, and drive adoption of insurance among underserved populations.
Reinventing Customer Experience Through Digital Innovation
One of the core promises powering the emPLE transformation is a dramatic overhaul of the customer experience. emPLE Life already provides a 24-hour service model, ensuring customers can reach the company at any moment of need. This always-on approach is rare in the local insurance industry and signals emPLE’s commitment to responsiveness and reliability.
Dr. Daudi also tackled a long-standing issue in the sector: public skepticism around claims payment. Insurance companies have historically struggled with perceptions of delays and administrative hurdles.
emPLE Life aims to correct this narrative through simplified processes that have enabled same-day claims payments, with targets to reduce this turnaround time even further to just a few hours. This commitment, if sustained, has the potential to restore public confidence and cement emPLE Life as a pioneer in swift, transparent service delivery.
The rebranding has been met with optimism from key stakeholders within the insurance ecosystem. President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana, Shaibu Ali, recognized the transition as a powerful catalyst for sector-wide innovation. He described the development as one that will “engineer a lot of new energy and innovation,” adding that a takeover injects fresh momentum into the competitive landscape.
Ali believes emPLE’s advanced technology capabilities will significantly deepen insurance penetration and create new opportunities for brokers to better serve clients. His remarks reflect broader industry expectations that emPLE Life’s entry will raise standards and intensify digital adoption across the sector.
Building on Legacy While Targeting New Frontiers
Despite the fresh identity, emPLE Life is not abandoning Metropolitan’s legacy. Board Chairman, Kwame-Gazo Agbenyadzie, highlighted the company’s nearly two decades of experience in providing pensions, life, and health insurance. Instead of discarding its foundation, emPLE Life intends to enhance it through technology partnerships and expanded product offerings.
Agbenyadzie pointed to the company’s intention to reach the informal sector more effectively, announcing a pilot product named Medscare, designed specifically for this demographic. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and tailored solutions. He also revealed that emPLE Life plans to introduce additional health insurance products, strengthen pension solutions, and transform the customer service experience.
With access to the broader Ample Group international network, emPLE Life will also leverage insights and tested models from markets such as Nigeria to accelerate its growth in Ghana. This cross-border strategy is expected to support product diversification, operational efficiency, and technological advancement.
The transformation of Metropolitan Insurance into emPLE Life signals a defining moment for Ghana’s insurance landscape. By prioritizing accessibility, digitalization, and customer-centricity, the company is setting new industry benchmarks. emPLE Life’s mission to simplify insurance, shorten claims processes, and extend coverage to the informal sector positions it as a crucial agent in narrowing Ghana’s insurance gap.
