National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has undertaken one of its most impactful operations in the Asuom in the Eastern Region.
The dedicated task force, executed a carefully coordinated operation, leading to the arrest of eight individuals and the seizure of multiple excavators and vehicles.
This decisive action reflects a growing commitment to safeguarding natural resources and restoring environmental integrity, as illegal mining activities have continued to threaten vital water sources and farmlands.
The operation targeted a well-established illegal mining site along the Nukura Stream in the Kwaebibrem District. Over the course of several months, this site had caused extensive damage, prompting NAIMOS to act.
Arriving in the area late in the day, officers swiftly moved along the stream banks, encountering foreign-operated machinery actively digging within the watercourse. Six Chinese nationals—Tanmina Wen, Yanale, Gin Sha, Huang Yu, Wen Tunnel, and Chen Shuming—alongside two local collaborators, were apprehended without incident.
According to Hon. Elikem Eric Kotoko, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, the suspects were escorted securely to Accra for detailed investigative processes.
NAIMOS further immobilized five heavy-duty excavators and confiscated operational vehicles, demonstrating a significant reduction of resources for illegal mining activities.

The operation in Asuom demonstrates the effectiveness of NAIMOS in confronting illegal mining head-on. Besides the arrests and equipment seizures, NAIMOS destroyed makeshift camps and operational sheds used by illegal miners, ensuring these locations could not be reoccupied.
The operation also unearthed large quantities of fuel stored at the site for ongoing illegal practices, which were taken as evidence and further illustrate the scale of operations against Ghana’s resources.
A field assessment revealed that over fifty acres of land had been severely scarred, emphasizing the substantial environmental damage inflicted by these activities.
Elikem Eric Kotoko also emphasized the importance of this operation and its outcomes not just in a punitive sense but also as a critical element in restoring the balance between mining and environmental conservation.
“The reach of NAIMOS is real, sustained, and expanding. The era of impunity is ending,” he asserted, reinforcing the message that illegal operations will face heightened scrutiny and consequence.
This is an indication of a larger shift the government is making strides toward ensuring responsible mining practices are prioritized, and the repercussions of illegal mining are clearly outlined.
