National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has undertaken one of its most impactful operations in the Asuom in the Eastern Region.
The dedicated task force, executed a carefully coordinated operation, leading to the arrest of eight individuals and the seizure of multiple excavators and vehicles.
This decisive action reflects a growing commitment to safeguarding natural resources and restoring environmental integrity, as illegal mining activities have continued to threaten vital water sources and farmlands.
The operation targeted a well-established illegal mining site along the Nukura Stream in the Kwaebibrem District. Over the course of several months, this site had caused extensive damage, prompting NAIMOS to act.

Arriving in the area late in the day, officers swiftly moved along the stream banks, encountering foreign-operated machinery actively digging within the watercourse. Six Chinese nationals—Tanmina Wen, Yanale, Gin Sha, Huang Yu, Wen Tunnel, and Chen Shuming—alongside two local collaborators, were apprehended without incident.
According to Hon. Elikem Eric Kotoko, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, the suspects were escorted securely to Accra for detailed investigative processes.
NAIMOS further immobilized five heavy-duty excavators and confiscated operational vehicles, demonstrating a significant reduction of resources for illegal mining activities.
“The message from NAIMOS operations remains unmistakably clear across the country; illegal mining networks, foreign collaborators, and local enablers are being systematically dismantled. Rivers, forests, and farmlands once destroyed are now under active protection.”

Championing the Fight Against Illegal Mining

Established to combat illegal mining activities, NAIMOS plays a pivotal role in the country’s broader efforts to regulate the mining industry.
The organization was formed in response to the escalating threat posed by illegal mining which often results in environmental degradation and social unrest.
NAIMOS coordinates with various law enforcement agencies to conduct operations aimed at disrupting illegal mining networks and enforcing legislation designed to protect the country’s natural resources.

Through its operations, NAIMOS seeks not only to curtail the immediate impacts of illegal mining but also to foster a culture of responsible mining practices.
Critics of illegal mining highlight its detrimental effects on both the environment and local communities.
Water sources, essential for both agricultural and human consumption, often face severe contamination from mining activities. The operations at Asuom, noted for their detrimental impact on farmlands and water quality, underscore the necessity for NAIMOS operation.
The successful raid illustrates how focused interventions can dismantle illegal operations while simultaneously affirming the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship. As NAIMOS ramp up their efforts, they aim not only to secure immediate victories but also to incentivize a transformation within the mining sector toward more sustainable practices.
Committed to Environmental Protection

The operation in Asuom demonstrates the effectiveness of NAIMOS in confronting illegal mining head-on. Besides the arrests and equipment seizures, NAIMOS destroyed makeshift camps and operational sheds used by illegal miners, ensuring these locations could not be reoccupied.
The operation also unearthed large quantities of fuel stored at the site for ongoing illegal practices, which were taken as evidence and further illustrate the scale of operations against Ghana’s resources.
A field assessment revealed that over fifty acres of land had been severely scarred, emphasizing the substantial environmental damage inflicted by these activities.
Elikem Eric Kotoko also emphasized the importance of this operation and its outcomes not just in a punitive sense but also as a critical element in restoring the balance between mining and environmental conservation.
“The reach of NAIMOS is real, sustained, and expanding. The era of impunity is ending,” he asserted, reinforcing the message that illegal operations will face heightened scrutiny and consequence.

This is an indication of a larger shift the government is making strides toward ensuring responsible mining practices are prioritized, and the repercussions of illegal mining are clearly outlined.
While NAIMOS continues its operations across the Eastern Region and beyond, the hope is that the combined efforts of law enforcement and community education will cultivate a culture that respects and protects Ghana’s abundant natural resources.
Increasingly, illegal miners are abandoning sites out of fear of apprehension, indicating that the pressure exerted by NAIMOS is effective. The fight against illegal mining is more than just a governmental focus; it stands as a crucial pillar for the future of responsible mining in the country, promoting a sustainable environment for generations to come.
