The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed one of its most remarkable trading sessions in recent weeks as activity surged dramatically across the board.
By the close of trading, investors had exchanged a total of 39,754,317 shares valued at GHS 218,508,144.86, marking a sharp spike in market participation and liquidity.
Compared to the previous trading session on Wednesday, February 18, the figures tell a compelling story. Trading volume improved by an astonishing 645 percent, while turnover skyrocketed by 804 percent. For many market watchers, the numbers signal renewed investor confidence and growing appetite for equities on the local bourse.
Massive Jump in Trading Activity
The surge in both volume and turnover reflects heightened investor engagement. A turnover growth of 804 percent in a single session is no ordinary feat. It suggests that large institutional trades and strong retail participation combined to drive momentum.
A total of 17 listed equities participated in trading. Out of these, 11 recorded gains, just one declined, and the rest remained unchanged. The dominance of gainers over losers highlights the strong bullish sentiment that defined the session.
Market analysts say such broad based participation often indicates confidence in underlying economic fundamentals. When both volume and prices rise simultaneously, it typically points to sustained demand rather than speculative spikes.
Republic Bank Leads the Charge
Among the gainers, Republic Bank Ghana emerged as the standout performer. The stock appreciated by 10 percent to close at GHS 1.65 per share, leading the rally.
Close behind were SIC Insurance Company, which gained 9.76 percent, Access Bank Ghana with a 9.42 percent increase, and GCB Bank, which rose by 9.09 percent. The strong performance of these financial sector stocks also helped lift the broader financial index significantly.
The banking and insurance sectors have increasingly become key drivers of market momentum. Investors appear to be positioning themselves in financial equities, betting on improved earnings and stronger balance sheets.
MTN Ghana Defies the Trend
Despite the overall bullish session, MTN Ghana was the only equity that recorded a decline. The telecom giant slipped by 1.85 percent on the day.
Interestingly, MTN Ghana still dominated trading activity in terms of volume. The company recorded the highest number of traded shares at 31.8 million. This was far ahead of Societe Generale Ghana, which saw 7.3 million shares traded. CalBank and Guinness Ghana Breweries followed with 192,596 and 186,872 shares respectively.
The high volume in MTN Ghana suggests active repositioning by investors. Even though the share price dipped slightly, the heavy trading indicates that the stock remains one of the most actively followed counters on the market.
Indices Reflect Strong Momentum
The bullish sentiment was clearly reflected in the performance of the market indices. The benchmark GSE Composite Index climbed by 43.14 points, representing a 0.38 percent increase, to close at 11,384.70.
The broader performance metrics are even more impressive. The index has recorded a one week gain of 17.49 percent, a four week gain of 26.92 percent, and an overall year to date gain of 29.81 percent. These figures underline the sustained rally that has characterized the market in recent weeks.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index also posted a notable increase of 2.84 percent to close at 6,326.64 points. Its performance has been particularly strong, recording a one week gain of 18.78 percent, a four week gain of 29.56 percent, and a year to date gain of 36.14 percent.
Such consistent growth suggests that financial sector equities are playing a leading role in driving the market higher.
Market Capitalization Expands
As a result of the strong trading session, the total market capitalization of the Ghana Stock Exchange expanded to GHS 211.7 billion.
An increase in market capitalization reflects growing investor wealth and rising valuations of listed companies. For both institutional and retail investors, the upward trajectory offers reassurance that the local equity market remains resilient.
Market observers believe that sustained liquidity and continued positive earnings reports could further support the rally. However, they caution that investors should remain mindful of global and domestic economic developments that may influence sentiment.
Renewed Confidence on the Local Bourse
The latest trading session reinforces the narrative that the Ghana Stock Exchange is experiencing a period of renewed dynamism. The 804 percent surge in turnover stands as a powerful indicator of growing participation and deepening liquidity.
While isolated declines such as that of MTN Ghana show that the market remains selective, the dominance of gainers points to broad based optimism.
For investors, momentum has returned to the local bourse, and confidence appears to be building steadily. If current trends persist, the exchange could continue to deliver impressive gains in the weeks ahead.
