President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a vision of national progress and shared prosperity as Ghana prepares to mark its 70th anniversary of independence next year.
Speaking at the 69th Independence Day celebration held at the Jubilee House, the President called on citizens to renew their commitment to building a nation defined by opportunity, unity, and sustainable development.
In his address, President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s future is closely connected to the broader progress of the African continent. According to him, the country’s growth and stability cannot be separated from Africa’s collective advancement.
“Ghana’s destiny is inseparable from Africa’s destiny,” he stated, stressing the importance of cooperation among African nations to unlock economic potential and promote shared prosperity.
The president pointed out that Africa currently has a population of more than 1.4 billion people and possesses the youngest workforce in the world. He said this demographic advantage presents enormous opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth if properly harnessed.
Significance of the African Continental Free Trade Area
President Mahama also highlighted the significance of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which is headquartered in Accra. He described the initiative as one of the most ambitious economic integration efforts ever undertaken in the world.

According to the president, the agreement offers African countries a unique platform to strengthen intra continental trade while creating new opportunities for businesses and industries across the region.
He explained that the initiative is designed to create a unified market for African goods and services while also encouraging innovation and economic independence across the continent.
“A unified market for African goods and services, a platform for African innovation, and a foundation for Africa’s economic sovereignty,” he noted while describing the broader impact of the trade agreement.
President Mahama assured citizens that Ghana will continue to lead by example in demonstrating that democratic governance, economic reform, and African unity can work together to drive sustainable development.
A Bright Future
As the country approaches the milestone of its 70th anniversary of independence next year, the president urged Ghanaians to reaffirm their commitment to a national vision that prioritizes the well being of every citizen.
He described a future Ghana where no child goes to bed hungry and where every citizen has access to opportunities that enable them to improve their lives.
Among the key priorities outlined by the president was the need to strengthen education so that it remains accessible and empowering for all. He stressed that education must continue to serve as a powerful tool for personal advancement and national development.
“A Ghana where education is accessible and empowering,” President Mahama said while outlining his aspirations for the country. The president also highlighted the importance of making healthcare affordable and accessible to every Ghanaian.
He said improving the health system is essential for strengthening the country’s productivity and overall quality of life. President Mahama further spoke about the need to invest in world class infrastructure that supports economic growth and improves living conditions across the country.
Local Production
According to him, strong infrastructure will help drive industrial development and create opportunities for businesses and communities. He also emphasized the importance of building an economy that is capable of producing the goods it consumes.
The President explained that strengthening local production will help reduce dependence on imports while boosting domestic industries. “A Ghana that produces what it consumes,” he said, underscoring the importance of economic self-reliance.
President Mahama added that fairness and equal opportunity must remain central to the nation’s development agenda. He stressed that progress will be more sustainable when opportunities are determined by merit rather than personal connections.
The president also spoke about the importance of expanding digital connectivity across the country. He noted that Ghana must work toward becoming a fully connected nation, linking communities from the southern border town of Aflao to the northern community of Hamile through modern digital infrastructure.
Environmental protection was another key issue highlighted in his address. Mahama said safeguarding forests and natural resources is critical to ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy and sustainable environment.
“This vision is within reach, but it requires our collective efforts,” he said. Reflecting on Ghana’s journey since gaining independence 69 years ago, President Mahama acknowledged that the country has faced moments of difficulty and disappointment.
However, he said the determination and resilience of the Ghanaian people have always remained strong. “The journey has not always been smooth,” he said. “We have stumbled and often felt disappointed in ourselves, but we have never given up.”
The President described resilience as one of the defining characteristics of the Ghanaian spirit, noting that the country’s ability to persevere has enabled it to continue moving forward despite challenges.
A Pledge of Integrity, Humility and Dedication
President Mahama pledged to serve the nation with integrity, humility, and dedication while working to improve the welfare of citizens. At the same time, he emphasized that the responsibility for national development rests not only on the leadership of government but also on the contributions of every Ghanaian.
“But Ghana’s progress cannot rely solely on my leadership,” he stated. “It will depend on every citizen doing their part.” He therefore called on citizens to commit themselves to excellence in their respective fields, stressing that collective effort will be necessary to achieve the country’s development goals.
“Wherever you are, whatever you do, do your part with excellence,” he urged. President Mahama concluded his address by encouraging Ghanaians to celebrate the nation’s achievements while remaining focused on the work ahead.
He said the goal of building prosperity and inspiring hope must continue to guide the country’s efforts beyond the Independence Day celebration. “Today we celebrate how far we have come,” he said. “And when we leave here tomorrow, we must commit ourselves to how far we will go.”
