President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a message of encouragement and responsibility to Ghanaian youth, urging them to harness the opportunities of the digital age while preparing themselves with discipline and resilience for the future.

His remarks were made during the 69th Independence Day celebration held at the Jubilee House, where he addressed the role of young people in shaping the country’s development.

Speaking directly to the younger generation, the president emphasized that he recognizes both their potential and their frustrations. He assured them that their voices and aspirations are acknowledged at the highest level of leadership.

“To the young people of this country, I see you, I hear you, and I believe in your potential,” he said, stressing that Ghana’s future will depend largely on how well its youth prepare themselves for the opportunities ahead.

President Mahama noted that today’s generation is uniquely positioned in history due to the tools and technology available to them. According to him, devices such as smartphones have expanded access to education, entrepreneurship, and global engagement in ways that previous generations could scarcely imagine.

However, the President acknowledged that many young people continue to face challenges, including unemployment and limited opportunities after completing their education. He said the government is aware of these concerns and is working to address them through targeted policies and investments.

He revealed that the government is expanding digital infrastructure and supporting programmes designed to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation among young people. These initiatives, he said, aim to equip the youth with the skills required to compete in an increasingly technology driven global economy.

President Mahama added that innovation hubs and support programmes are being established across several parts of the country to ensure that opportunities are not limited to the capital alone. According to him, these initiatives are being rolled out in major cities, including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Ho, and Koforidua.

“These programmes are designed to support your ideas and help you transform them into viable businesses and careers. We want young people everywhere in Ghana to have access to the tools they need to succeed.”

Educational Reforms

Beyond infrastructure and entrepreneurship initiatives, the President highlighted reforms being introduced in the education sector. He explained that the government is working to align educational programmes with the realities of the modern economy so that graduates are better prepared for employment and innovation.

Part of this strategy involves expanding internship and apprenticeship opportunities for students. President Mahama said these programmes are intended to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical work experience, allowing young people to gain skills that employers and industries require.

Despite the government’s efforts, the President stressed that national progress will ultimately depend on the commitment and mindset of young people themselves.

He encouraged the youth to cultivate discipline, resilience, and a strong work ethic as they pursue their ambitions. “Success will also depend on discipline, resilience, and excellence; the future belongs to those who prepare for it,” he said.

Celebration of Excellence

President Mahama also used the occasion to recognize the achievements of students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership. He congratulated 52 students who were recently honored with the President’s Independence Day Award for school children earlier in the week.

The award recognizes outstanding academic performance and dedication among students across the country. According to the president, such achievements highlight the potential that exists within Ghana’s youth and the importance of nurturing talent through education and mentorship.

In addition, he commended Keta Secondary Technical School for winning the 69th Independence Day Quiz Competition, describing the achievement as an example of academic excellence and healthy competition among schools.

President Mahama also extended congratulations to the winners of this year’s National Debates Competition, noting that initiatives like these encourage critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement among young people.

“All of you represent the promise of Ghana’s future,” he said, addressing the students and participants who have excelled in national academic competitions.

The President concluded by reiterating his confidence in the country’s younger generation. While acknowledging the challenges they face, he expressed optimism that with the right support systems, policies, and personal commitment, Ghana’s youth will play a decisive role in shaping the nation’s economic and social progress.

His message at the Independence Day celebration underscored a broader national focus on empowering young people through education, technology, and opportunity, while also reminding them that preparation and determination remain essential ingredients for success.
