Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has opened up about his latest single Popstar, his evolving artistry, and ambitions beyond music, following the track’s rapid rise on streaming platforms.

The song, released on March 27, 2026, quickly climbed to the top of the Apple Music charts in Ghana within hours, reaffirming his strong influence in the local music scene.

Speaking about the creative process, Black Sherif explained that the track was recorded during a trip to Johannesburg in a relaxed and spontaneous setting. “The song Popstar was produced during a trip to Johannesburg. We made the song easy and free,” he said.

Produced by longtime collaborator Joker Nharnah, Popstar marks a new phase in the artist’s musical journey. Unlike his earlier work, which often focused on struggle and survival, the new single leans into introspection, exploring themes of fame, identity, and the pressures that come with global recognition.

A shift from struggle to introspection

Black Sherif noted that the song reflects his personal growth and changing perspective as his career expands beyond Ghana. While affirming his status as a pop star, he described the track as a deeper reflection on his life and experiences rather than a celebratory anthem.

The song’s visual presentation also signals this evolution. Its music video adopts a stylised aesthetic, featuring elements reminiscent of classic performance eras, including a nod to Michael Jackson through costume and visual symbolism.

This artistic direction reinforces his intent to position himself as a global performer while maintaining a distinct identity.

Born Mohammed Ismail Sherif, the artist also spoke about his growing recognition within the Ghanaian music industry. He has received nine nominations at the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards, a milestone he said he had anticipated.

“I knew I would be there,” he remarked, indicating confidence in his artistic journey and the reception of his work. The awards, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most prestigious music platforms, celebrate excellence in contemporary music and highlight artists who are shaping the industry.

Personal inspiration and artistic identity

Reflecting on his creative influences, Black Sherif pointed to his mother as a central source of inspiration. He described her impact as foundational to both his personal and artistic development. “My inspiration for my art is my mother. She fuels everything through her actions,” he said.

He also revealed that his naturally reserved personality played a role in pushing him toward music, allowing him to express thoughts and emotions that might otherwise remain unspoken. This introspective approach has become a defining feature of his artistry.

Black Sherif emphasised that he deliberately avoids conventional commercial themes, choosing instead to focus on narratives that reflect real life experiences and personal aspirations. According to him, this commitment to authenticity is central to his connection with listeners.

Military ambition surprises fans

In a surprising revelation, the artist shared his desire to join the Ghana Armed Forces at some point in his life. He explained that this ambition emerged around his twenty-fourth birthday, driven by a desire to fully experience different paths in life. “I want no protocol or special treatment. I want to undergo the full training like any other recruit,” he said.

He reflected on the expectations of his parents, noting that his father encouraged him to become a responsible and capable individual, while his mother envisioned a more traditional path involving religious scholarship and a stable career.

Expanding global reach

Following the success of Popstar, Black Sherif has lined up several tour dates both within Ghana and internationally. These performances are expected to further strengthen his presence on the global stage as he continues to build a diverse fan base.

“It is exciting to see my music reaching audiences beyond Ghana. I want to connect with fans everywhere,” he said. His ability to blend local storytelling with universal themes has contributed significantly to his growing international appeal.

As he continues to evolve, Black Sherif appears focused on maintaining artistic depth while expanding his reach. His latest work suggests a deliberate effort to balance commercial success with meaningful storytelling, positioning him as one of the leading voices in contemporary African music.

With more releases and performances expected in the coming months, the artist’s trajectory points toward sustained growth and influence, both at home and abroad.
