Sundowns Beat Esperance to Book CAF Champions League Final Spot

South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns have sealed their place in the final of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League following a disciplined and hard-fought victory over Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis in the semi-finals.

The Brazilians completed a 2-0 aggregate triumph, capping it with a narrow 1-0 win at home after grinding out the same scoreline in the first leg in Tunis just days earlier.

It was a tie defined by tactical discipline, defensive resilience, and moments of clinical execution when it mattered most.
The decisive moment in the second leg came in the 35th minute through Brayan León, who once again proved to be Sundowns’ difference-maker across both legs.

The Colombian forward reacted quickest after his initial penalty was saved by Esperance goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said, calmly slotting home the rebound to hand his side the lead.

Leon’s contribution was not a one-off. He had already delivered in the first leg, scoring the only goal in Tunis to give Sundowns a slender but crucial advantage heading into the return fixture.

Over the two legs, his composure and positioning turned a tight contest into a controlled progression for the South African side.

Esperance, known for their pedigree and experience in continental competitions, struggled to break down a well-organized Sundowns setup. Despite spells of possession and attempts to force a comeback, the Tunisian outfit lacked the cutting edge needed to overturn the deficit, ultimately falling short over the two legs.

Back-to-Back Finals

This latest breakthrough marks a significant milestone for Sundowns, who have now reached the Champions League final in consecutive seasons.

However, their recent memory of the competition carries a sting. In the previous campaign, they fell agonizingly short, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Egyptian side Pyramids FC in the final.

That defeat appears to have sharpened their resolve. The current run reflects a team that has learned from past shortcomings, blending experience with efficiency as they chase continental glory once again.

Historically, this will be Sundowns’ fourth appearance in a Champions League final, having previously reached the showpiece in 2001, 2016, 2025, and now 2026.

Their most iconic moment remains the 2016 triumph, when they defeated Zamalek SC to lift their only continental title to date.

That victory was more than just a club achievement. It ended a 21-year wait for a South African club to win Africa’s premier club competition, dating back to Orlando Pirates’ success in 1995.

Since then, Sundowns have consistently established themselves as one of the continent’s dominant forces, but turning that dominance into trophies has remained a recurring challenge.

Now, they stand on the brink once again, with an opportunity to reclaim the crown and reinforce their legacy in African football.

Attention will now shift to the other semi-final clash between Moroccan sides RSB Berkane and AS FAR Rabat. AS FAR currently hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, placing them in a strong position to advance and set up a potentially explosive final against Sundowns.

Whoever emerges will face a Sundowns side that looks sharper, more mature, and arguably more ruthless than in previous campaigns. The question now is whether they can finish the job this time or repeat the costly mistakes that denied them glory just a season ago.
