Tennis stars Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz were the headline winners at the Laureus World Sports Awards, claiming the top individual honours in a glittering ceremony held in Madrid on Monday night.

The duo were named Laureus World Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year respectively, capping off remarkable runs that have defined the current era of tennis.

The 26th edition of the awards took place at the iconic Palacio de Cibeles, bringing together elite athletes from across the globe in a celebration of excellence.

An emotional Sabalenka struggled to contain her excitement as she stepped up to receive her award, admitting the moment had overwhelmed her. “I’m shaking right now, I have goosebumps because I feel emotional and speechless.”

Sabalenka’s Dominance Rewarded

Sabalenka’s triumph comes on the back of a dominant stretch that has firmly established her as the leading force in women’s tennis.

The world number one has combined power with composure, producing a level of consistency that has separated her from the rest of the field. Her recent achievements include completing the coveted Sunshine Double, winning both Indian Wells and the Miami Open in emphatic fashion.

In Miami, she defeated Coco Gauff in the final, showcasing not just raw power but also improved tactical awareness in high-pressure moments. That run added to her 2025 US Open triumph, further strengthening her claim as the standout performer in women’s tennis.

Sabalenka has now held the top spot in the WTA rankings for over a year, underlining her sustained excellence at the highest level.

Titles aside, it is her evolution as a player that has drawn widespread admiration. Known earlier for her aggressive baseline game, she has added variety and mental resilience, making her far more difficult to break down in tight matches.

Her Laureus recognition reflects not just results, but her transformation into a complete and dominant athlete on the global stage.

Alcaraz Fulfils Dream Season

On the men’s side, Alcaraz’s rise continues to gather pace, with the Spaniard securing the Sportsman of the Year award following a sensational campaign. “It’s a dream come true, it means a lot,” Alcaraz said after receiving the honour.

The young Spaniard has quickly become one of the defining figures in modern tennis, blending explosive athleticism with maturity beyond his years.

His victories at the French Open and US Open were central to his selection, as he demonstrated an ability to perform consistently on the sport’s biggest stages.

Alcaraz’s success is also symbolic for Spanish tennis, as he carries forward a legacy built by greats before him while carving out his own identity. His all-court game, relentless energy, and fearless approach have made him a fan favourite and a formidable opponent.

The ceremony itself was hosted by tennis legend Novak Djokovic, adding further prestige to an already star-studded evening. Athletes from multiple disciplines gathered in Madrid, highlighting the global reach and significance of the Laureus Awards.

For both Sabalenka and Alcaraz, the recognition serves as validation of their hard work and consistency over the past year. But it also sets a new benchmark.
Because once you’ve been named the best in the world, the question changes. It’s no longer about reaching the top. It’s about staying there while everyone else is coming for you.
