The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has added his voice to the video circulating on social media, alleging that South Africans have confronted a Ghanaian. The video displays xenophobic attacks on a Ghanaian migrant in South Africa.
In an official statement released by the Minister, he confirmed that no life has been lost and therefore urged Ghanaians to calm down and exercise patience. He communicated that he had engaged the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, His Excellency Ronald Lamola, through a phone call concerning the trending video.
The discussion he revealed centered around the incidents shown in viral footage, which have sparked anxiety among Ghanaians both at home and abroad. According to the Minister, the South African Minister expressed his empathy with the victims, and also recognized the seriousness of the situation as it goes against the international relations policies of the country.

His Excellency Lamola, according to Hon. Okudzeto, has assured him that an investigation into the incidents is already in place, aimed at identifying the culprits and ensuring accountability. This commitment has been received as an essential step toward fairness and reinstating confidence among foreign nationals living in South Africa.
He further reiterated that the South African government is expected to convene a high-level briefing with African ambassadors later today. The meeting is expected to deliver insights on the matter, announce measures being taken to curb xenophobic violence, and reinforce diplomatic cooperation between countries across the continent.
Hon. Okudzeto announced that since the incident, he has been in constant discussions with Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency Benjamin Quarshie, staying up to date on the issue and ensuring the welfare of Ghanaians in South Africa. “I am gladdened that so far, colleagues in our diplomatic mission have located the main victim in the viral video and are offering consular assistance. He is doing very well.”
Reassuringly, the victim is reported to be in stable condition and is currently receiving consular assistance from Ghanaian officials. This development has brought some relief to concerned citizens, especially as distortions and assumptions continue to circulate on social media.
Importantly, the government emphasized that no Ghanaian fatalities have been recorded in connection with the incidents. While the attacks are deeply troubling, this confirmation serves to counter exaggerated claims and reduce public panic. Officials have urged Ghanaians to remain calm and to trust in the government’s ability to manage the situation effectively.
“Let me assure compatriots that the Mahama administration remains uncompromising about the welfare and safety of Ghanaians, both at home and abroad. We are determined to guarantee the protection of all citizens.”
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
He explained the government’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians, irrespective of where they reside. The government reiterated that the safety and dignity of its citizens remain a top priority, and that it will not hesitate to take necessary actions to ensure their protection.

Hon. Okudzeto Calls For Unity On The Continent
Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa seized the opportunity to call for unity and togetherness across the African continent. Stating that, Africans must remain peaceful and loving towards each other as well as empathetic.
“May these regrettable incidents never quench our Pan-African love and solidarity for each other. The overwhelming majority of Africans are united, and share an unbreakable bond-we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements.”
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
He stressed that xenophobic violence undermines the shared values of Pan-Africanism, which emphasize solidarity, mutual respect, and collective progress. While acknowledging that such incidents can strain relations, he noted that they are often driven by a small minority and do not reflect the attitudes of the majority.
As investigations continue in South Africa, attention will remain on how both governments handle the situation in the coming days. The outcomes of the ambassadorial briefing and the promised investigations are expected to play a crucial role in shaping public perception and ensuring accountability.
