Ghana’s singer, rapper, and songwriter, Mohammed Ismail Sherif, famously known as Black Sherif, has once again cemented his place among Ghana’s top music stars after being crowned Artiste of the Year at the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
The victory marks the second time the award winning musician has secured the prestigious title, having first won the top honour in 2023 during the 24th edition of the awards.
Black Sherif’s latest triumph follows what many industry players describe as one of the strongest years of his career, driven largely by the success of his sophomore album, Iron Boy.
The musician emerged victorious ahead of a highly competitive field that included Stonebwoy, King Promise, Medikal, and Sarkodie. His victory places him among a select group of Ghanaian artists who have won the Artiste of the Year award more than once, joining names such as Sarkodie and Stonebwoy.
Iron Boy Dominates Awards Night
Black Sherif enjoyed one of the biggest nights at the awards ceremony, securing multiple honours across major categories. In addition to winning Artiste of the Year, he also received the Album or EP of the Year award for Iron Boy.

The project earned additional recognition after receiving a GH¢100,000 cash prize from Pulse Ghana alongside production support from Guinness Ghana. Black Sherif further claimed the Songwriter of the Year award for his song Sacrifice. The same track also secured the Best Afropop Song award during the ceremony.
His song Where Dem Boyz additionally earned him the Best Hip Hop Song award, strengthening his dominance across different music categories. The multiple awards highlighted the strong commercial and critical reception enjoyed by Iron Boy throughout the year.
Music analysts say the project significantly expanded Black Sherif’s influence both within Ghana and internationally, reinforcing his status as one of Africa’s fastest rising artists.
Emotional Reflections on Success
During reflections surrounding his victory, Black Sherif emphasized the dedication, sacrifice, and hard work that shaped his journey over the past year. According to him, the success of Iron Boy was not accidental but the result of deliberate effort and commitment.
“For this particular award, I beg you to make they give me six minutes. I have to really talk about the album. First, I go thank the fans. Thank you so much for listening.”

Fans Remain Central to His Journey
A major theme throughout Black Sherif’s comments following the awards centered on gratitude toward his supporters, popularly referred to by the artist as his “villagers.”
The musician acknowledged the role his fan base has played in sustaining his growth and helping his music reach wider audiences across the world. Black Sherif’s connection with younger audiences and his emotionally driven storytelling continue to distinguish him within Ghana’s music landscape.
Over the past few years, the artist has developed a reputation for combining highlife, hip hop, drill, and Afrobeats influences while addressing themes of struggle, ambition, sacrifice, and resilience. Analysts believe this unique style has helped him maintain strong appeal both locally and internationally.
Competition Remained Intense
Although Black Sherif dominated the awards night, competition within the major categories remained intense. Medikal also enjoyed a successful evening after securing several awards across different categories.

Meanwhile, Stonebwoy, King Promise, and Sarkodie all entered the event with strong industry support following active years in music production, performances, and commercial success. The competitiveness of the Artiste of the Year category reflects the growing depth and diversity of Ghana’s contemporary music scene.
The awards ceremony itself also highlighted the continued expansion of Ghanaian music beyond local audiences, with several artists attracting increasing international recognition.
Black Sherif’s Growing Legacy
With his second Artiste of the Year victory, Black Sherif now joins a small group of Ghanaian musicians who have managed to win the country’s top music honour multiple times. The achievement further solidifies his place among the leading figures shaping modern Ghanaian music.
His rise from breakthrough artist to two time Artiste of the Year winner has been widely viewed as one of the most significant success stories within the Ghanaian entertainment industry in recent years.

Analysts also believe his consistency, authenticity, and ability to connect emotionally with audiences continue to strengthen his influence across Africa’s evolving music scene.
As celebrations continue following the 2026 TGMA ceremony, attention is already turning toward Black Sherif’s next creative phase and how he intends to build on the momentum generated by Iron Boy and his latest awards success.
