The New Patriotic Party has completed preparations for its nationwide internal elections scheduled to begin on May 10 across all 41,000 polling stations in the country. Party officials say election committees at the constituency and polling station levels are ready to supervise the exercise in line with approved guidelines.

Speaking ahead of the elections, the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Alhaji Haruna Mohammed, said reports received from various constituencies indicated a high level of preparedness across the country. He explained that each polling station cluster would be supervised by a three member election committee responsible for coordinating activities and ensuring compliance with the party’s electoral rules.

According to him, some polling stations are expected to witness competitive contests, while others would have candidates elected unopposed. He noted that notices of polls have already been issued in several constituencies to guide delegates and aspirants through the electoral process.

The Deputy General Secretary explained that the elections would run from May 10 to May 16 as part of the party’s internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections. He added that constituency executives have continued to submit reports to the national leadership on preparations and security arrangements.

He further stated that no official communication available to the party leadership suggested that any constituency was unprepared for the elections. He added that the various election committees had remained active in coordinating logistics and administrative procedures ahead of voting.

Alhaji Haruna Mohammed also addressed concerns over reports of court injunctions affecting some constituencies, including Akwatia, Swedru, New Juaben and Bunkpurugu. He explained that the party leadership was yet to receive official confirmation on whether the legal processes had been properly served on the affected constituencies.

According to him, the party would act in accordance with the law if the legal processes were formally brought to its attention. He stressed that the New Patriotic Party remains committed to respecting judicial processes and constitutional procedures in all internal matters.

The Deputy General Secretary called on party supporters and aspirants to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the elections.

“The message I have for the rank and file of the party is that this is a political contest. We are contesting for positions to serve the party. Anybody who wins means the party has won, and anybody who loses does not mean it is the end of the process. There will be other opportunities and other avenues for everyone to contribute to the forward march of the party. Let us campaign based on our ideas and on what we can do for the party. At the end of the day, we should all come together and work for the betterment of the New Patriotic Party.”

Alhaji Haruna Mohammed

He also encouraged members to maintain unity after the elections regardless of the outcome in their respective polling stations.

Party Pushes Unity Through Policy Committees Ahead of 2028 Elections

Alhaji Haruna Mohammed also defended the composition of the party’s newly constituted policy and sector committees, stating that the structures are intended to strengthen policy coordination ahead of the 2028 elections.

He explained that the committees form part of the National Council structures working in line with the vision of the party’s flagbearer.

According to him, the arrangement combines parliamentary leadership with party leadership through a co-chair system designed to improve policy direction and organisational coordination. He noted that the committees are expected to support policy development while contributing to the party’s long term electoral strategy.

He clarified that the committees are not solely linked to the flagbearer and that, they are institutional structures recognised under the party’s constitution. He added that the policy committees would help shape campaign proposals and governance strategies ahead of the next general elections.

The Deputy General Secretary stated that some former contenders in the party’s presidential primaries were appointed to leadership roles because of their professional experience and contributions to national development.

“The flagbearer made this proposal because these people were not chosen simply because they contested against him. They were selected because they have expertise that the party recognises. If you look at them one by one, including Bryan Acheampong, you can see his contribution to security and his expertise in that area. He is also a PhD holder. Their experience and expertise are needed within the structures of the party. That is why the flagbearer believes they should be given the opportunity to apply their authority and experience to help the party win power in 2028, which is our shared goal.”

Alhaji Haruna Mohammed

He added that younger members also stand to benefit from the experience and institutional knowledge of senior figures within the party.

The Deputy General Secretary maintained that the party’s leadership intends to build a united front capable of improving policy alternatives and strengthening electoral preparations toward the 2028 polls. Consequently, the party remains focused on bringing together individuals with diverse competencies to contribute to its future direction.
