Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a painful 1-0 defeat to 10-man Senegal in their second Group D game at the 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Despite dominating large spells of the contest and enjoying a numerical advantage for over half the game, the Starlets failed to capitalize as Senegal produced a resilient display to secure their first victory of the tournament. The defeat leaves Ghana bottom of Group D with just one point heading into their final group game against South Africa.
The Black Starlets started brightly and controlled possession from the opening minutes, forcing the Senegalese into a series of desperate challenges.
Ghana’s attacking movement caused problems for Senegal’s defense and the pressure eventually took its toll late in the first half. Sixteen-year-old El Hadji Sow was shown a second yellow card with four minutes remaining before halftime after another reckless challenge, reducing Senegal to 10 men.
The dismissal handed Ghana a major advantage and the Starlets immediately intensified their search for the opening goal. Their best opportunity arrived in the eighth minute of first half additional time when Ghana were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the box.

Isaac Barfo stepped forward with the chance to put the Black Starlets ahead but failed to convert as Senegal goalkeeper Assane Sarr made the save. The missed penalty proved costly as the two sides went into the break with the score still level at 0-0.
Senegal Hold On To Clinch a Vital Win In The Second Half
Just 13 minutes after the restart, Senegal stunned Ghana by taking the lead despite being a man down. Ibrahima Dione reacted quickest inside the penalty area to tap home a dangerous cross from Mouhamed Wagner after hesitation from the Ghana defense and goalkeeper Solomon Kesse.
The goal shifted momentum as the 2023 champions retreated into a compact defensive shape and invited Ghana to attack.

The Black Starlets continued to dominate possession but struggled to break down the disciplined Senegalese backline. Ghana pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but their final ball lacked quality and composure in crucial moments.
Senegal’s defenders remained alert throughout the second half while goalkeeper Sarr produced a confident display whenever called upon. The Starlets attempted to increase the tempo late in the game, but Senegal continued to frustrate them with organized defending and quick clearances.
After six minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew the final whistle to confirm Senegal’s first win of the tournament and a damaging defeat for Ghana.
Group D Blown Wide Open
Senegal’s victory has blown Group D wide open with all four teams still in contention for qualification to the knockout stage.
Algeria, who defeated South Africa earlier in the day, now sit atop of the group with four points. South Africa occupy second place with three points despite their defeat, while Senegal move into third place with three points as well.
The two-time CAF U-17 AFCON champions are rooted bottom with only one point from two matches.
Ghana must now beat South Africa in their final group game to stand any realistic chance of progressing to the knockout round. Qualification for the latter stages is also important because it could secure Ghana a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year.
The defeat will raise serious concerns for the Starlets coaching staff, particularly after the team failed to take advantage of playing against 10 men for more than 45 minutes.
Missed chances, lack of cutting edge in attack and defensive lapses ultimately punished Ghana in a game they were widely expected to control after Senegal’s red card.
The Black Starlets now face enormous pressure heading into their decisive clash with South Africa as they attempt to keep their tournament hopes alive.
