The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed a widely circulated notice on social and traditional media platforms claiming that the Kingdom of Cambodia had issued deportation directives targeting African nationals. The Ministry described the document as fake and urged the public to disregard it.
The viral notice alleged that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African countries residing in Cambodia had been instructed to leave the country by 31st May 2026 or face arrest, imprisonment, and financial penalties for alleged immigration violations.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.”

Cambodian Authorities Deny Notice
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs referenced a formal clarification issued by the General Department of Immigration of the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia, which categorically denied the authenticity of the circulating notice.
The Cambodian immigration authority stated that it had observed false reports published on certain websites claiming that Cambodia had ordered Africans with expired immigration waivers to leave by a specified deadline. It described the information as “completely untrue.”
The statement further directed the public to rely only on official government communication channels for accurate immigration information. It also provided guidance on where verified updates could be accessed, including its official website and hotline services.
The Ghanaian Ministry said this clarification confirmed that the viral notice had no basis in official policy or government action.
Warning Against Misinformation
The Ministry cautioned the public and media organisations against sharing unverified content, noting that such misinformation can create unnecessary fear and confusion among affected individuals and their families.
It stressed that immigration-related claims, when false, have the potential to cause distress for Ghanaian nationals abroad and distort public understanding of diplomatic relations.
The Ministry urged the public to rely strictly on official government sources for information relating to Ghanaian citizens overseas.
Support for Ghanaian Nationals in Cambodia
The Ministry also provided updates on ongoing efforts to support Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia who have expressed interest in returning home. It noted that prior to the emergence of the fake notice, some Ghanaian nationals had already indicated their willingness to voluntarily return to Ghana.
The Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, has been coordinating with relevant partners to facilitate their return. Between March and May 2026, a total of 85 Ghanaian nationals were successfully evacuated through diplomatic arrangements.
“It is worth noting that arrangements are ongoing to equally facilitate the evacuation of an additional seventy-six (76) Ghanaian nationals who are currently in Cambodia and have expressed the desire to return home.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Ghana continues to work closely with Cambodian authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens living in the country.
It commended the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for its cooperation in handling matters concerning Ghanaian nationals, describing the engagement as constructive and ongoing.
Officials reiterated that Ghana remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad through sustained diplomatic coordination and consular support.

The Ministry advised the public and media outlets to verify all immigration-related information before sharing or publishing it, warning that misinformation can spread quickly and create unnecessary alarm.
It reaffirmed that official government communication channels remain the most reliable source of information on matters affecting Ghanaian nationals abroad.
The Ministry said it will continue to provide timely updates on developments involving Ghanaian citizens overseas as part of its responsibility to ensure transparency and public awareness.
