Ibrahima Konaté has officially brought his Liverpool career to an end after leaving the club upon the expiration of his contract, closing the curtain on a memorable five-year spell at Anfield.

The French defender announced his departure with an emotional farewell message to supporters, teammates and staff, reflecting on a journey that saw him establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-backs.

Konaté joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 and quickly became a key figure in the Reds’ backline. His partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk played a crucial role in the club’s domestic successes, including the Premier League title triumph during the 2024/25 campaign.

Over the course of his Liverpool career, the 27-year-old made 183 appearances and scored seven goals while helping the club lift one Premier League title, two Carabao Cups and an FA Cup.

His departure follows unsuccessful contract renewal talks, with Liverpool and the player unable to reach an agreement over a new deal. Konaté now leaves Anfield as a free agent and is expected to consider his next move after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

An Emotional Goodbye

In a heartfelt statement shared with supporters, Konaté described representing Liverpool as one of the greatest honours of his career.

“Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams. Today, I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Representing this club has been an honour. We’ve shared incredible moments together… highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever, none more painful than losing our brother Diogo.”

The defender also opened up about personal challenges he endured during his final year at the club, including the loss of his father. “Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods of my life, but even through hardship, my commitment to this club never changed. During the toughest moments, I gave everything I had for this badge,” he added.

Konaté went on to thank those who played a part in his development during his time on Merseyside. “To my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for helping me grow every single day.”

He reserved special praise for Liverpool’s supporters, acknowledging the role they played throughout his journey with the club. “And to the supporters… thank you for your love, your energy, and your incredible support. Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted.”

Legacy and Future Plans

One of the biggest regrets expressed by Konaté was not having the opportunity to properly say goodbye to the Liverpool faithful during his final appearance. “I am deeply saddened that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you,” he revealed.

The centre-back concluded his message with a heartfelt tribute to the club that helped shape his career.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. This isn’t an easy goodbye, but it’s time for a new challenge and a new chapter. See you again soon, inshallah.”

Konaté leaves Liverpool having firmly established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders of the modern era. His physical presence and composure on the ball made him a favourite among supporters and an important figure in Liverpool’s success over the past several seasons.

For now, the France international remains focused on international duty as he prepares with the French national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Decisions regarding his future are expected to be made after the tournament.

Several clubs have been linked with the defender in recent months. Spanish giants Real Madrid were among the sides reportedly interested and held discussions over a potential free transfer before talks eventually cooled.

As Konaté begins a new chapter in his career, he departs Liverpool with silverware, lasting memories and the respect of the Anfield faithful, leaving behind a legacy built on commitment, resilience and professionalism.
