Former England international, James Milner, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, bringing the curtain down on one of the most remarkable and enduring careers in English football history.
The veteran midfielder confirmed his decision in an emotional statement on social media, ending a playing career that spanned 24 seasons in the Premier League and saw him represent some of England’s biggest clubs.
Milner’s final club was Brighton & Hove Albion, where he joined in 2023 after leaving Liverpool. Despite injury setbacks during the latter stages of his career, the former England international remained a respected figure in the dressing room and helped Brighton secure European qualification for only the second time in the club’s history.
Reflecting on his journey, Milner revealed that the time had come to step away from the game after achieving more than he ever imagined when he made his Premier League debut as a teenager. “After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” Milner wrote on his Instagram page. “From making my debut for Leeds United, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on.”
From Leeds Wonderkid to Premier League Record Holder
Milner’s career began at Leeds United before spells at Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton. He also spent a brief loan spell at Swindon Town early in his development. “To have gone on to represent Newcastle, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool and Brighton, and not forgetting a memorable month at Swindon, has been an incredible privilege.”

Across those clubs, Milner built a reputation as one of the most dependable and versatile players of his generation. Whether deployed in midfield, at full-back or on the wing, he consistently delivered for every manager he worked under.
His longevity was unmatched. Milner retires as the player with the most Premier League appearances in history, having featured in 658 matches across more than two decades in England’s top flight.
Liverpool Success and Lasting Legacy
Although Milner enjoyed success throughout his career, his time at Liverpool will be remembered as one of the defining chapters of his journey.
After joining the Reds in 2015 from Manchester City, he became a key member of Jürgen Klopp’s side that transformed Liverpool into one of Europe’s dominant teams. Milner played a crucial role as Liverpool ended a near 30-year wait for a league title by winning the Premier League in the 2019/20 season.

A year earlier, he helped the Merseyside club reclaim European glory by winning the UEFA Champions League, ending a 14-year wait for the continent’s biggest prize. He also lifted the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup during his Anfield stay.
Looking back on his career, Milner highlighted the experiences and relationships he built through football as the greatest rewards.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country, England, at two European Championships and two World Cups. But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”

Milner earned 61 caps for England and represented the Three Lions at major international tournaments, further cementing his place among the most respected figures of his generation.
In a heartfelt message to supporters, he expressed gratitude to everyone who played a part in his journey.
“To the fans, thank you. To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you’ll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too, you all played your part in making the journey memorable and helping shape me as a player and person.”
