Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella has completed a high-profile move from Chelsea to Real Madrid, bringing an end to his four-year stay at Stamford Bridge and marking a new chapter in his career with the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid officially announced the transfer on Monday, confirming that the 27-year-old defender has signed a six-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2032.
The move sees Cucurella return to his homeland after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most energetic and reliable full-backs.
His arrival adds further depth and experience to a Real Madrid squad that continues to strengthen ahead of another demanding campaign having already brought in Danzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté, and Bernardo Silva.
In a statement confirming the deal, the Spanish club said “Real Madrid C. F. and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Marc Cucurella, who will be linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032.”
Chelsea Spell Comes to an End
Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer of 2022 in one of the most notable defensive transfers of that window.
Despite experiencing mixed fortunes during his early period in West London, the Spaniard gradually became an important figure in the squad through his consistency, work rate, and versatility.

Over four seasons with the Blues, Cucurella made 116 appearances in all competitions, contributing eight goals and ten assists. His tireless performances from the left flank earned him the admiration of the supporters and coaching staff.
The defender also played a key role in Chelsea’s recent successes, helping the club lift the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively made him one of the team’s most dependable performers during crucial moments.
Chelsea paid tribute to the defender following the announcement of his departure.
“Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements. We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.”

Return to Spain for New Challenge
The transfer represents a homecoming for a player who developed through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before making his breakthrough in Spanish football with Eibar and later Getafe.

Although he never established himself in Barcelona’s first team, Cucurella built an impressive reputation through determination and consistent performances, eventually earning a move to Brighton before his switch to Chelsea.
Now, he joins one of the most decorated clubs in world football and will be expected to strengthen Real Madrid’s defensive options as they continue competing for major domestic and European honours under new head coach Jose Mourinho.
His experience at both club and international level is likely to prove valuable for a Real Madrid side that blends established stars with emerging talents.
The 36-time Spanish champions view Cucurella as a player capable of making an immediate impact while also contributing to the club’s long-term plans.
Focus Turns to World Cup Duty
While his club future has now been settled, Cucurella’s immediate attention remains on international duty with Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defender is currently part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad and is expected to feature later today when Spain take on tournament debutants Cape Verde in their opening match of the competition.

Cucurella arrives at the World Cup as one of Spain’s most experienced defenders, having played an important role in the country’s triumph at the UEFA European Championship in 2024. His performances during that tournament further enhanced his reputation and cemented his place within the national team setup.
Spain will be hoping that experience can help them improve on their recent World Cup performances. Since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010 under Vicente del Bosque, La Roja have struggled to replicate that success, failing to progress beyond the Round of 16 in each of their subsequent appearances.
As Spain begin another quest for global glory, Cucurella does so with added confidence following the biggest club transfer of his career. The move to Real Madrid represents both a reward for his development and an opportunity to establish himself on one of football’s grandest stages.
