South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has highlighted the exceptional talent of young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, describing the centre-back’s rapid development as one of the most impressive success stories in Bafana Bafana’s squad ahead of their second group game against Czechia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mbokazi, the youngest player in the South African dressing room, has become one of the most talked-about members of the squad following his emergence from the domestic game to the global stage in less than two years.
The 20-year-old defender started in South Africa’s opening Group A match against Mexico and is expected to play another key role when Bafana Bafana face Czechia in a crucial encounter today that could determine their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

A dramatic turn of events followed shortly afterwards with a game changing transfer request. “The coach told me I wouldn’t be going back to AmaZulu because Orlando Pirates had called to sign me.”
That opportunity proved to be the catalyst for a meteoric rise that has taken him from youth football to the FIFA World Cup in just 18 months.
