GNPC Explorco has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tamale Technical University (TaTU) to strengthen technical capacity and prepare a new generation of industry-ready professionals for Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.

The agreement, signed on June 18, 2026, establishes a formal framework for collaboration between GNPC Explorco, the commercial upstream subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and one of northern Ghana’s leading technical universities.

The partnership seeks to bridge the gap between academia and industry by combining classroom instruction with practical petroleum-sector experience through technical knowledge transfer, collaborative research, specialised training and skills development programmes.

The initiative comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to deepen local participation in the upstream oil and gas industry while building the technical expertise needed to support exploration, production, environmental management and operational safety.

Bridging Industry And Academia

The collaboration is expected to strengthen the connection between academic training and the practical demands of Ghana’s petroleum industry, ensuring graduates are better prepared to meet the evolving needs of the sector.

According to GNPC Explorco, the partnership will provide opportunities for specialised training workshops, collaborative research, technical knowledge exchange and practical exposure initiatives that give students a deeper understanding of upstream petroleum operations.

The initiative is also intended to support faculty development by creating opportunities for closer engagement with industry professionals, while encouraging applied research that responds to the operational needs of Ghana’s energy sector.

By aligning academic programmes with real-world industry practices, both institutions hope to produce graduates with the technical and professional competencies required to contribute meaningfully to the country’s upstream petroleum industry.

A Broader Focus Beyond Technical Training

Representatives from GNPC Explorco’s Corporate Affairs and Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) departments participated in the signing ceremony, reflecting the partnership’s wider focus beyond engineering and technical education.

The involvement of the two departments underscores a commitment to promoting sustainable operational practices, regulatory compliance, workplace safety and stakeholder engagement—areas that have become increasingly important across the global oil and gas industry.

Modern upstream petroleum operations require professionals who not only possess strong engineering skills but also understand environmental stewardship, health and safety standards, community relations and corporate responsibility.

The partnership therefore seeks to expose students to the broader realities of the petroleum industry while preparing them for careers that demand both technical expertise and professional accountability.

Institutional Commitment

The Memorandum of Understanding was executed on behalf of GNPC Explorco’s Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director by the company’s Head of Corporate Affairs, highlighting the strategic importance attached to the collaboration.

The signing ceremony was attended by members of the university’s governing council, senior administrators and academic heads, reflecting the significance both institutions place on the partnership.

The agreement was formally witnessed by the Chairman of the TaTU Governing Council, Mandariwura Alhaji Seidu Iddi, adding further institutional weight to the collaboration.

Advancing Ghana’s Local Content Agenda

The partnership comes as Ghana continues efforts to strengthen local participation in the upstream petroleum sector through sustained investment in human capital development.

Although the country has built significant expertise since the start of commercial oil production, industry-academia collaboration remains essential to developing the next generation of engineers, technicians, safety professionals and environmental specialists needed to support future exploration and production activities.

The partnership is expected to contribute to that objective by creating structured pathways for students to gain industry exposure while enabling GNPC Explorco to support curriculum development and technical capacity building.

It also provides an opportunity for the company to play a more direct role in shaping the skills base required for Ghana’s long-term energy ambitions.

Expanding Opportunities In Northern Ghana

The Team

Beyond its contribution to the petroleum sector, the agreement carries important regional significance.

As one of northern Ghana’s leading technical universities, Tamale Technical University plays a critical role in producing graduates in engineering, applied sciences and technical disciplines.

By partnering with TaTU, GNPC Explorco is extending petroleum-sector capacity building beyond Ghana’s traditional industrial centres and creating opportunities for students in northern Ghana to engage more directly with the country’s upstream energy industry.

The collaboration is expected to promote more inclusive participation in the petroleum sector while supporting national efforts to develop technical talent across all regions of the country.

From Partnership To Implementation

With the legal framework now in place, both institutions are expected to move into the implementation phase of the partnership through specialised training programmes, research collaborations and practical learning opportunities.

The success of the initiative will ultimately depend on how effectively these programmes are delivered and the impact they have on student development, research outcomes and workforce readiness.

If successfully implemented, the partnership could serve as a model for future collaboration between Ghana’s energy institutions and tertiary educational establishments, demonstrating how industry and academia can work together to strengthen local capacity.

For Ghana’s petroleum industry, the agreement reinforces an important reality: achieving meaningful local content requires more than policy commitments. It demands sustained investment in education, knowledge transfer and institutional partnerships that prepare Ghanaian professionals to lead the country’s upstream energy future.
