In the bustling city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, a determined Nigerian woman named Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack is making headlines with her extraordinary attempt to set a Guinness World Record.

Since June 22, 2026, Habibat has been engaged in a non-stop 144-hour Holy Bible reading marathon, a feat of physical endurance, mental focus, and deep spiritual devotion tagged “144 Hours in the Word.”

The challenge, which equates to six full days of continuous reading aloud, is taking place at the Novotel Hotel in Port Harcourt. Organizers from The Summit Bible Church have structured the event to comply strictly with Guinness World Records guidelines.

This includes official witnesses, professional audio recording equipment for verification, timers, and limited short breaks only for essential needs such as hydration, minimal rest, and basic sustenance. As of late June, Habibat had already surpassed the 100-hour mark and was pushing into the final stretch, with the attempt scheduled to conclude around July 2.

Habibat, often seen seated at a specially arranged table or standing at a wooden podium with a large purple Bible propped open before her, reads with evident passion and focus. Video footage from the event shows her in athletic wear or comfortable attire, occasionally smiling or gesturing emphatically as she recites scripture.

Large digital timers track her progress hour by hour, while a prominent purple backdrop emblazoned with “144 Hours in the Word” and Guinness World Records branding dominates the setup. Microphones capture every word for official review.

This ambitious endeavor is more than a bid for a world record. Church leaders and supporters describe it as a spiritual project designed to inspire greater engagement with the Bible among believers.

In a country where faith plays a central role in daily life for millions, Habibat’s marathon serves as a powerful call to immerse oneself in scripture. Supporters have visited the venue, offered prayers, and followed live streams, turning the event into a communal moment of encouragement and reflection.

Guinness World Records has strict protocols for endurance categories like marathon reading aloud. The current overall record stands at 215 hours and 2 seconds, achieved by fellow Nigerian Samson Ajao in Osogbo in May 2024.

Habibat’s 144-hour target positions her attempt as a significant personal and potentially category-specific milestone, especially if recognized for Bible-specific content or female participation. Organizers emphasize adherence to rules that prohibit prolonged stops, ensuring the reading remains continuous and audible.

The physical and mental demands of such a challenge are immense. Reading aloud for days on end tests vocal stamina, concentration, and resilience against fatigue. Habibat has been seen persisting through long hours, sometimes seated in a supportive chair and other times standing at the podium.

Her commitment has drawn admiration from many Nigerians, who view it as a testament to faith-driven perseverance in the face of discomfort. “No food, no sleep, just the Word,” one social media observer noted, highlighting the sacrificial element.

Public Reaction

Reactions on social media have been largely positive, with users praising her dedication and praying for strength to complete the marathon. Many see it as an inspiring example in a fast-paced digital age where attention spans are short. “Habibat is not playing with God,” commented one supporter, reflecting a common sentiment of awe at her endurance.

However, not all responses have been supportive. Some critics question using the Bible for record-breaking purposes, arguing it should remain a tool for personal devotion rather than public spectacle. Others debate the choice of text or cultural implications in Nigeria’s diverse religious landscape.

Despite differing opinions, the attempt has sparked broader conversations about faith, endurance, and the role of religious practice in contemporary society.

Habibat’s journey reflects Nigeria’s growing prominence in Guinness World Records. The country has produced numerous record holders across categories, from culinary feats to athletic endurance, showcasing creativity and determination on the global stage. This Bible reading marathon adds a spiritual dimension to that legacy, blending personal faith with international recognition.

As Habibat approaches the finish line, anticipation builds. Success would not only etch her name into record books but also amplify her message of scriptural immersion.

Organizers continue to monitor progress closely, ensuring all criteria are met for official ratification.

In Port Harcourt and beyond, Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack’s marathon stands as a compelling story of one woman’s resolve. It reminds observers that extraordinary achievements often stem from quiet, sustained commitment.

As timers tick forward and verses flow, her attempt embodies both human limits and the heights of spiritual aspiration in modern Nigeria. Supporters remain hopeful she will cross the 144-hour threshold strongly, turning her personal devotion into an inspirational landmark.
