Abdul Fatawu Issahaku celebrate after scoring for Leicester City in the Championship

Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has expressed his pride after completing a permanent move to Ipswich Town from Leicester City, with the Premier League returnees securing his services ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Tractor Boys, keeping him at Portman Road until the summer of 2031, after Ipswich agreed an undisclosed fee with Leicester City. Sources, however, indicate the deal is worth around £20 million plus £3m in add-ons.

Fatawu arrives at Ipswich after Leicester City’s relegation to League One last season, but the Ghanaian will return to the Premier League following Ipswich’s promotion back to England’s top flight. He previously featured in the division during the 2024/25 campaign with the Foxes before they dropped to the second tier.

The winger, who was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, played in all four of the Black Stars’ matches at the tournament, including the group-stage encounter against England. Despite not starting any game, he created the most chances (2) for Ghana, underlining his attacking influence.

Fatawu Excited By Ipswich Ambition

Speaking after completing his move, Fatawu said he was eager to begin a new chapter with Ipswich and contribute to the club’s Premier League ambitions.

“I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town. The ambition the club has is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season. After speaking to the manager, I know what the expectation is and I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and starting work.”

The Ghanaian winger also highlighted his familiarity with Ipswich after facing the club since his arrival in England and praised the supporters’ passion. “I have played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England and I know how passionate the supporters are for the club, so I’m excited to play for them and show them what I can do.”

Fatawu will join his new teammates at Ipswich’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, as preparations continue for their return to the Premier League.

Ghana Star Brings European Experience

The move represents another significant step in Fatawu’s career, which has already included experiences in England’s top flight, the UEFA Champions League and the highest level of international football.

Last season, he contributed double figures in goals and assists for Leicester City in the Championship, scoring nine goals in 44 appearances across competitions. He previously played a key role in Leicester’s promotion-winning campaign in 2023/24, earning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

Fatawu joined Leicester initially on loan from Sporting CP during the 2023/24 season before making the move permanent. During his time in Portugal, he featured in the Champions League after joining Sporting from Ghanaian side Dreams FC.

Born in Tamale, Ghana, Fatawu began his career with Steadfast before moving to Dreams FC in 2021, where his performances earned him a move to Europe.

At international level, he gained recognition after being named Player of the Tournament when Ghana won the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations. He made his senior debut later that year and has since earned 32 caps, scoring three goals for the Black Stars.

O’neil Backs Fatawu To Make Impact

Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil believes Fatawu’s technical quality and ability in one-on-one situations will provide an important attacking option for the squad.

“Abdul is a young player who has already gained good experience in the game and we’re excited to have him with us. He has strong physical and technical attributes, is comfortable on the ball and can test the opposition in one-on-one situations, so will provide us with good options within the squad.”

Gary O’Neil, Ipswich Town manager

The Ipswich boss added that Fatawu’s experience at the World Cup demonstrates his readiness for the challenge ahead. “Having represented his country at the World Cup this summer, I know he is now looking forward to getting to work ahead of the Premier League season.”

With his pace, creativity and growing experience at club and international level, Fatawu becomes one of Ipswich’s major signings as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.
