France cruised into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden at the MetLife Stadium in New York, New Jersey, inspired by another sensational performance from Kylian Mbappé.
The France captain struck twice while Bradley Barcola added the other goal as Didier Deschamps’ side produced another dominant display to continue their march toward a third World Cup crown.
Mbappé’s latest brace also saw him edge closer to one of the greatest records in World Cup history. The Real Madrid forward now has 18 World Cup goals, leaving him just one behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who tops the all-time scoring chart with 19 goals.

Remarkably, Mbappé has reached 18 goals in just 18 World Cup appearances, while Messi needed 29 matches to score 19.
The French superstar has also moved beyond Miroslav Klose’s previous tally of 16 goals, underlining his status as one of the greatest performers the tournament has ever seen.
Mbappé and Messi are currently level on six goals each at the 2026 World Cup, although the the eight-time Balon d’or winner still has the opportunity to add to his total when Argentina face Cape Verde in the Round of 32.
Mbappé Continues Historic World Cup Run
Mbappé’s remarkable tournament statistics continue to grow with every outing. His latest double means he has now scored 10 goals in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, the highest tally ever recorded by a player in the history of the tournament.

The 27-year-old has also scored four goals in World Cup finals, another tournament record, having found the net in both of the last two championship deciding matches.
His brace against Sweden was his third of the ongoing tournament, further strengthening his case as one of the favourites for the Golden Boot.
Olise Pulls the Strings as France Cruise
Michael Olise once again showcased his creative brilliance with a pair of assists that proved crucial in France’s comfortable victory.
Mbappé thought he had opened the scoring early in the contest, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. The disallowed goal did little to slow his momentum as France continued to dominate possession and create chances.
The breakthrough finally arrived on the stroke of half-time. Olise threaded a perfectly weighted pass into Mbappé’s path, and the forward cut inside from the left before curling a superb finish beyond Sweden goalkeeper Windahl Zetterström.

That strike gave France a deserved lead and marked Mbappé’s 17th World Cup goal, the strike that saw him overtake Germany legend Miroslav Klose.
France doubled their advantage just seven minutes into the second half when Bradley Barcola finished confidently for his third goal of the tournament after another flowing attacking move.
Mbappé completed his brace midway through the second period after latching onto another clever Olise pass before calmly firing beyond Zetterström to put the result beyond doubt.
The France captain was deservedly named Superior Player of the Match after another influential display.
Olise’s outstanding performance also saw him move to five assists for the tournament, two more than any other player. He also became the first footballer to register five assists in a single FIFA World Cup since 1994.
France’s latest victory continued an impressive scoring streak on the global stage. Les Bleus have now scored at least three goals in five consecutive World Cup matches, a run stretching back to the dramatic 2022 final against Argentina, which ended 3-3 before France were beaten on penalties.
The attacking depth and fluidity shown throughout the tournament have made the French one of the standout teams, with Mbappé, Olise and Barcola all playing central roles in their impressive campaign.
France Set Up Paraguay Showdown
Standing between France and a place in the quarter-finals is Paraguay, who produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by eliminating Germany on penalties in the Round of 32.

The Round of 16 clash will take place on Saturday, July 4, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, where Mbappé will have another opportunity to equal or even surpass Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record while leading France’s pursuit of another world title.
