BIFA-nominated actress Lauryn Ajufo will lead the first major UK revival of Michaela Coel’s groundbreaking debut play Chewing Gum Dreams, Theatre503 announced on Monday in a development reported exclusively by Variety.

The production marks a significant milestone for the semi-autobiographical work that launched Coel’s career and offers Ajufo a high-profile opportunity to step into the role originally performed by the writer herself.

Chewing Gum Dreams follows Tracey Gordon, a sharp-witted, working-class teenager navigating the turbulent final days of school in East London. The play blends raw humor, vulnerability, and social commentary as Tracey confronts first love, friendship, family pressures, and the dreams that both sustain and complicate her coming-of-age journey.

Coel developed the piece as her final-year project at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before its public debut in 2012. Its success helped pave the way for her later triumphs, including the BAFTA-winning series I May Destroy You and the Channel 4 sitcom Chewing Gum, which expanded on similar themes and characters.

Ajufo, recognized for her standout performances in projects that highlight complex Black British experiences, expressed deep enthusiasm for the role. “I’m beyond excited to be part of the first UK revival of the renowned play, Chewing Gum Dreams; to step into the shoes of Michaela Coel is truly an honour,” she said in a statement.

“I’m looking forward to working with Anthony and the brilliant team at Theatre503 to bring this beautiful piece of theatre back to life”

The revival will be directed by Anthony Simpson-Pike and presented by Theatre503 in partnership with tiata fahodzi, a company dedicated to Black British theatre. It launches a new strand at Theatre503 celebrating debut plays.

Due to strong early demand, the run at the intimate London venue has already been extended. Performances are scheduled from September 10 through October 3, 2026.

This production arrives at a moment of renewed interest in Coel’s foundational work. Since its early performances, Chewing Gum Dreams has been celebrated for its authentic voice, linguistic dexterity, and unfiltered portrayal of adolescent life in multicultural Britain.

Coel’s ability to weave comedy with poignant observations on race, class, sexuality, and ambition resonated strongly with audiences and critics alike, establishing her as a distinctive theatrical talent long before her screen successes.

For Ajufo, taking on Tracey Gordon represents both a challenge and a career highlight. Her previous roles have demonstrated a capacity for emotional depth and magnetic stage presence, qualities essential for a one-woman show format that demands the performer command the audience’s attention while embodying multiple perspectives and inner monologues.

Public Reactions

Industry observers note that Ajufo’s BIFA nomination underscores her rising status, positioning this revival as a potential breakout theatrical moment.

Theatre503, known for championing bold new writing and diverse voices, provides an ideal home for the revival. The venue’s focus on intimate, impactful storytelling aligns perfectly with the play’s raw energy and personal scale.

The partnership with tiata fahodzi further emphasizes a commitment to authentic representation and supporting Black creative voices in British theatre.

Coel has not publicly detailed her level of involvement in the revival, but her influence looms large. The play remains a landmark text in contemporary British drama, frequently studied and referenced for its innovative structure and cultural significance.

Its return to the stage offers newer generations of theatre goers a chance to experience the work that helped shape one of the most important voices in modern entertainment.

This announcement also reflects broader trends in UK theatre, where revivals of recent landmark works by writers of color are gaining prominence alongside new commissions.

As audiences seek stories that capture the complexities of contemporary identity, Chewing Gum Dreams feels both timeless in its emotional core and urgently relevant in its social observations.

Tickets are expected to move quickly given the buzz surrounding the casting and the play’s cult status. For many fans of Coel’s oeuvre, the revival promises a powerful theatrical experience that connects her early raw creativity to her established legacy.

Ajufo’s interpretation of Tracey will undoubtedly bring fresh layers to a character who continues to resonate more than a decade after her creation.

As rehearsals begin in the coming weeks, anticipation builds for how this new production will interpret the play’s blend of monologue, direct address, and vivid storytelling.

With strong creative leadership and a compelling lead, the revival has the potential to reaffirm Chewing Gum Dreams as essential viewing and listening for contemporary theatre audiences.
