US President Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of a sports and political controversy after describing NBA superstar LeBron James as “maybe a racist” while declaring Michael Jordan the greatest basketball player of all time.

The remarks came during a White House press conference on Friday when he was asked to settle one of basketball’s longest running debates by choosing between Jordan and James as the greatest player in NBA history.

Rather than limiting his response to basketball, Trump used the opportunity to make a personal remark about James, whose political views have frequently clashed with his own over the years.

“Michael Jordan is a guy that’s a friend of mine. I play golf with him. He’s a really good guy. I think LeBron is maybe a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way.”

The exchange immediately attracted widespread attention because it shifted what could have been a routine sports debate into another chapter of the long running feud between Trump and one of the NBA’s most influential figures.

Interestingly, the question was framed around James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers but the president’s response focused almost entirely on his personal relationship with Jordan and his criticism of James.

A Rivalry That Extends Beyond Basketball

The strained relationship between Trump and James is nothing new. Over the past decade, James has openly opposed Trump’s policies and leadership, endorsing Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton in 2016, Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024.

James has also been one of the most outspoken athletes on issues including racial inequality, police brutality and voting rights. His criticism of Trump became particularly prominent in 2017 after Trump withdrew the Golden State Warriors’ invitation to the White House following Stephen Curry’s indication that he would decline the visit.

James responded on social media by suggesting the White House had lost its prestige under Trump’s presidency.

Trump has, on several occasions, fired back at James through public statements and social media, making their disagreements one of the most visible examples of the intersection between sports and American politics.

Meanwhile, Michael Jordan has generally maintained a far lower political profile throughout his career. Although he has become more vocal on selected social issues in recent years through charitable initiatives and public statements, Jordan has traditionally avoided direct involvement in partisan political debates, making him a less controversial figure in the eyes of many political leaders.

The NBA GOAT Debate Remains Subjective

From a basketball perspective, the debate between Jordan and James remains one of the sport’s most enduring discussions.

Jordan’s résumé is extraordinary. The Chicago Bulls legend captured six NBA championships without losing an NBA Finals series, won five Most Valuable Player awards, earned ten scoring titles and built a global brand that transformed basketball’s commercial appeal.

James, however, has assembled an equally remarkable case. Now the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and the player with the most games played in league history, he has won four NBA championships with three different franchises while collecting four MVP awards.

His longevity, versatility and sustained excellence across more than two decades have led many analysts to argue that he has surpassed every player in league history.

Trump’s answer says far more about politics than basketball. Had he simply chosen Jordan, few would have been surprised.

Millions of basketball fans still regard Jordan as the greatest ever, while millions of others believe James has already overtaken him. That disagreement is part of what makes the debate fascinating.

What stood out was the decision to characterize James as “maybe a racist” without offering evidence to support such a serious accusation. Whether one agrees with James’ political positions or not, reducing one of the greatest athletes of his generation to a political label shifts attention away from the sporting achievements that prompted the question in the first place.

Ultimately, the Jordan versus James debate is unlikely to ever produce a unanimous answer. Jordan’s flawless championship record, competitive mentality and cultural influence remain unmatched for many fans.

James counters with unprecedented longevity, statistical dominance and sustained excellence in an era of heightened competition.

Trump’s latest comments ensure that the conversation will continue, but they also serve as another reminder that in modern America, even a discussion about basketball can quickly become inseparable from politics.
