MTN, Clydestone Rescue Market Amid Banking Stock Losses

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed one of its most remarkable trading sessions in recent weeks as investor activity surged dramatically, driven largely by an overwhelming demand for MTN Ghana shares.

The market recorded an astonishing 708 percent jump in trading volume compared to the previous trading session, signaling renewed confidence among investors and highlighting the growing appetite for equities on the local bourse.

By the close of trading, a total of 18,390,399 shares had changed hands, translating into a market value of GH¢121,566,868.13. The impressive performance marked a significant leap from Tuesday’s trading session and reinforced the GSE’s strong momentum in 2026.

MTN Ghana Dominates Market Activity

MTN Ghana emerged as the undisputed star of the trading session after accounting for the overwhelming majority of shares exchanged on the market. The telecommunications giant recorded an impressive 16.8 million traded shares, making it by far the most actively traded stock on the exchange.

Its exceptional trading volume dwarfed every other listed company and demonstrated the company’s continued appeal to both institutional and retail investors. The heavy activity also played a decisive role in pushing the day’s overall trading volume to one of its highest levels in recent weeks.

Trailing MTN Ghana were Kasapreko with 694,149 shares, Intravenous Infusions with 631,160 shares, and CalBank, which recorded 158,216 traded shares.

The concentration of activity around these counters reflected investors’ willingness to reposition their portfolios while taking advantage of opportunities across multiple sectors of the economy.

Investors Reward Strong Performers

Although MTN Ghana dominated trading volumes, several companies delivered notable gains in their share prices.

Hords emerged as the session’s biggest winner after its share price climbed 10 percent to close at GH¢0.33 per share. The impressive appreciation placed the company at the top of the gainers’ chart.

Intravenous Infusions followed with a strong 8.86 percent increase, continuing to attract investor attention.

Clydestone Ghana also recorded a healthy 3.56 percent gain, while CalBank strengthened its position with a 2.56 percent appreciation.

In total, 26 listed equities participated in the day’s trading, with six gainers and two losers, reflecting a generally positive market sentiment despite isolated declines.

Few Stocks End Lower

Not every listed company enjoyed gains during the trading session.

Ecobank Transnational Incorporated recorded a marginal 0.51 percent decline, while Kasapreko slipped 0.50 percent.

Despite these modest losses, the broader market remained resilient as buying interest across several counters outweighed the impact of the declining stocks.

The limited number of losers suggests that investors continue to maintain confidence in the Ghanaian equity market, even as they selectively rotate investments into companies with stronger growth prospects.

Composite Index Holds Firm

The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) experienced only a slight decline, shedding 0.57 points to close at 15,381.05.

The minor movement did little to dampen the exchange’s impressive performance over longer periods.

Over the past week, the index has gained 1.73 percent, while its four week performance stands at 4.46 percent.

Even more remarkable is the market’s year to date performance, with the benchmark index posting an outstanding 75.38 percent gain.

Such returns continue to place the Ghana Stock Exchange among the continent’s strongest performing equity markets, reflecting sustained investor optimism and improving corporate fundamentals.

Financial Stocks Continue Upward Journey

The financial sector also maintained its positive trajectory during the trading session.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) edged up 0.04 percent to close at 8,270.69 points.

Although the daily increase was modest, the broader performance remains encouraging.

The index has gained 0.35 percent over the past week and 0.02 percent over the last four weeks.

More significantly, it has delivered a remarkable 77.97 percent year to date return, underlining the impressive recovery and strength of Ghana’s banking and financial services sector.

The steady performance of financial stocks continues to reinforce investor confidence, particularly as economic conditions improve and expectations for stronger corporate earnings remain high.

Market Value Nears New Heights

Another highlight from the trading session was the Ghana Stock Exchange’s expanding market capitalization.

The total value of listed companies now stands at approximately GH¢292.6 billion, equivalent to around US$25 billion.

The growing market capitalization reflects the increasing value of listed companies and the sustained confidence investors continue to place in Ghana’s capital market.

As more investors participate in equity trading and listed firms continue to expand, the exchange is strengthening its position as a critical source of long term capital for businesses while creating wealth opportunities for shareholders.

Momentum Continues to Build

The latest trading session adds another chapter to what has already been an exceptional year for the Ghana Stock Exchange.

The combination of soaring trading volumes, robust year to date index gains, healthy market capitalization and sustained investor participation paints a positive picture for Ghana’s capital market.

MTN Ghana’s commanding presence in the market underscores its importance as one of the exchange’s most influential stocks. At the same time, strong performances from companies such as Hords, Intravenous Infusions, Clydestone Ghana and CalBank demonstrate that investor interest is broadening beyond a handful of blue chip companies.

If current momentum continues, market watchers expect the Ghana Stock Exchange to remain an attractive destination for investors seeking growth opportunities as Ghana’s economy continues its recovery and expansion.

With trading activity accelerating and investor confidence remaining resilient, the latest session serves as another reminder that the Ghana Stock Exchange is experiencing one of its strongest periods in recent history.
