Medeama SC have received a major boost ahead of their return to continental football after the Tarkwa and Aboso (TnA) Stadium was granted Category 2 approval by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The approval means the Ghana Premier League champions can host their 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League preliminary round matches at their preferred home venue, subject to CAF’s final confirmation for each fixture.
The certification represents a significant milestone for both Medeama and Ghanaian football, as it allows the Tarkwa-based club to welcome continental competition to their own grounds for the first time in history.
CAF’s decision followed a comprehensive inspection of the facility by its experts, who assessed the stadium against the latest CAF Stadium Regulations and confirmed that it meets the requirements to host selected continental matches.
For Medeama, the development provides an opportunity to enjoy home advantage in front of their passionate supporters instead of travelling to larger venues away from Tarkwa.
The achievement is particularly significant because Ghanaian clubs have often struggled to host CAF inter-club matches at their designated home grounds due to the limited number of facilities that meet the required continental standards.
The Category 2 approval also allows TnA Stadium to host CAF Youth and Women’s National Team qualifying matches, as well as preliminary round fixtures of CAF Interclub competitions.
Although each match remains subject to CAF’s confirmation under competition regulations, the approval places Medeama in a strong position to begin their Champions League campaign from their traditional base.
A Major Advantage for Medeama’s Continental campaign
The Mauve and Yellow have established Tarkwa as their football home over the years, and keeping their continental fixtures there represents a significant advantage.
Playing in familiar surroundings, with the backing of their supporters, could prove valuable as they attempt to make progress on the African stage and restore Ghana’s lost pride in club football on the continent.
The development also highlights the growing importance of club-owned and community-based football infrastructure in Ghana. Rather than relying entirely on national stadiums, clubs are gradually making efforts to upgrade their facilities to meet international requirements.
For Medeama, the approval is a reward for the club’s steady growth and ambition. After winning the Ghana Premier League title, the opportunity to bring Champions League football to Tarkwa adds another historic chapter to their rise in Ghanaian football.
In previous seasons, several Ghanaian clubs have been forced to move their home fixtures away from their traditional bases after failing to secure CAF approval for their facilities. The Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi have often served as alternative venues because they remain among the few facilities in the country that consistently meet CAF requirements for international competitions.
FC Samartex 1996 and Bibiani GoldStars are recent examples of clubs that encountered such challenges after qualifying for Africa. Last season, GoldStars had to relocate their CAF Champions League preliminary round fixture from Bibiani to the Accra Sports Stadium after their home venue was not approved by CAF.
Unlike those clubs, Medeama now have the opportunity to host their opening Champions League fixtures at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium, preserving the advantage of playing in front of their own supporters and avoiding the logistical challenges associated with travelling to another city.
The development is also a reflection of the investment made by Medeama, the Ghana Football Association, stadium management and other stakeholders to upgrade the facility to meet continental standards.
However, the approval of TnA Stadium does not completely address Ghana’s broader infrastructure challenges, as the country still has a limited number of venues capable of hosting CAF club competitions. The certification instead represents a positive step for Medeama and demonstrates the importance of clubs developing facilities that can support their ambitions beyond domestic football.
Further improvements required before full clearance
While CAF has granted Category 2 approval, the decision comes with some conditions that must be addressed to ensure continued compliance.
The stadium’s approved seating capacity will be adjusted by removing some seats affected by obstructed views caused by structural roof columns. CAF has also identified minor deficiencies that must be corrected before the venue hosts its next continental fixture.
A CAF Stadium Infrastructure Inspector will later attend a designated match to evaluate operations under actual match conditions, including security arrangements, spectator management, media operations, broadcasting requirements and overall stadium functionality.
The final decision on TnA Stadium’s suitability for future CAF and FIFA competitions will depend on the inspector’s report and confirmation that all outstanding issues have been resolved.
Nevertheless, the approval marks a historic achievement for Medeama, Tarkwa and Ghana football. It represents progress in improving domestic football infrastructure and gives clubs greater opportunities to compete on the continent without leaving their home grounds.
For Medeama, the dream of playing Champions League football in front of their own supporters is now closer to becoming reality.
