Mauricio Pochettino will remain head coach of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) until 2030 after agreeing a new long term contract with the U.S. Soccer Federation following the team’s encouraging run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

The former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager has been rewarded with a contract extension after leading the United States to the Round of 16, before they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium. Despite the exit, the tournament marked one of the country’s strongest World Cup performances in more than two decades and laid the foundation for the federation’s long term plans.

Pochettino, who took charge of the USMNT in September 2024, guided the Americans to a record number of victories at a single FIFA World Cup. His side won their group for only the third time in the nation’s history before defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2 to 0 in the Round of 32, securing the country’s first World Cup knockout stage victory since 2002.

The new agreement not only keeps the Argentine in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup cycle but also expands his influence beyond the senior men’s national team. Pochettino and his coaching staff will now contribute to youth development, coaching education, collaboration with professional leagues and other technical areas across U.S. Soccer.

U.S. Soccer described the extension as the beginning of a new phase for the federation, with the coaching staff expected to play a greater role in strengthening the country’s football structure while continuing to develop the senior national team.

Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General JT Batson said the federation was convinced Pochettino was the right man to lead the project into the future after overseeing significant progress during his first two years in charge.

“Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of U.S. Soccer. We know we have a lot of work to do to achieve our clear ambitions, including competing to win Men’s World Cups.”

Expanded Role Beyond The National Team

The federation said Pochettino’s responsibilities will now extend throughout the men’s national team pathway, allowing him to help shape the development of young players, coaches and technical programmes ahead of major competitions including the FIFA Under 17 and Under 20 World Cups as well as the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be hosted in the United States.

Pochettino welcomed the opportunity to remain in charge, insisting his coaching staff wanted to leave a lasting legacy that goes beyond results on the pitch.

“Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men’s National Team program even stronger. We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field.”

The 54 year old added that the passion shown by supporters throughout the World Cup reinforced his belief that the United States could continue developing into one of the world’s leading football nations.

Strong Platform For The Future

Since taking over, Pochettino has introduced 62 players to the national team from 16 leagues across 12 countries, while 23 different players have scored among the team’s 53 goals during his tenure. His willingness to integrate young talent saw several emerging players earn their first senior caps before making the 2026 World Cup squad.

U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone praised the culture established by the former Spurs boss, saying it had helped create an environment where experienced internationals and younger players flourished together. “Mauricio has built a culture where players trust the group, trust the process and trust each other,” she said. “That culture, and the staff who helped build it, are exactly what we want to continue investing in for the Men’s National Team now and for the future.”

Looking ahead, Pochettino’s side will prepare for a busy international calendar featuring the 2027 and 2029 CONCACAF Nations League tournaments, as well as the 2027 and 2029 CONCACAF Gold Cups before beginning qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

If all goes according to plan, Pochettino will remain at the helm for at least another four years as the federation pursues its ambition of turning the United States into a genuine contender on the global stage.
