Rockstar Games has announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with Netflix to premiere an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI exclusively on the streaming platform. The presentation, titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, will debut for Netflix subscribers on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. ET (12:00 p.m. PT).

It will then become available on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website six hours later, at 9:00 p.m. ET.1

The announcement, made on August 6, marks an unusual step for one of the most anticipated video game releases in history. Previous reveals for the series have typically dropped directly on YouTube or Rockstar’s own channels, generating massive simultaneous global viewership. This time, Netflix members get a six-hour head start on what many expect will include the first substantial gameplay footage of the title.

Netflix described the collaboration as a milestone. “Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of nonfiction series. “It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

The official Netflix page for the event carries a straightforward description: “See an extended look at ‘Grand Theft Auto VI,’ the next evolution in the groundbreaking ‘Grand Theft Auto’ series.” No runtime has been confirmed, and Rockstar has not detailed exactly what the presentation will contain.

Public Reactions

Fans and industry observers widely anticipate that it will move beyond the two cinematic trailers released so far-one in December 2023 and another in May 2025 and finally show the game in action. Those earlier trailers focused on story setup, characters, and atmosphere in the fictional state of Leonida, a reimagined Florida centered on Vice City. Actual playable systems, combat, driving, and open-world interaction have remained largely unseen.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at release. Pre-orders opened earlier this year, with the standard edition priced at $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition at $99.99 that includes additional in-game vehicles, weapons, apparel, and other content.

A physical version will be available, though it ships as a download code in a box rather than a disc.

The decision to place the extended look behind a Netflix subscription for the first six hours has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a clever marketing move that treats a major gaming reveal with the same event-style presentation reserved for blockbuster series or films.

Critics note that it requires a paid subscription for early access to content that will soon be free on YouTube, calling it an unusual barrier for a traditional trailer drop. Netflix does not currently offer a free trial in many regions, meaning interested viewers without an account would need to subscribe to watch it first.

This is not the first collaboration between the two companies. Netflix previously made remastered versions of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy and Red Dead Redemption available to subscribers through its games service on mobile devices.

The new partnership, however, elevates the relationship by giving the streamer exclusive early access to one of the year’s most significant entertainment moments.

Industry analysts view the move as part of a broader trend in which gaming and streaming platforms increasingly overlap. High-profile trailers and reveals have long functioned as cultural events capable of dominating social media and news cycles for days.

By hosting the premiere, Netflix positions itself at the center of that conversation and may attract temporary subscribers eager to be among the first to see new footage. Rockstar, for its part, gains an additional promotional channel with enormous reach while still ensuring the content reaches a free audience later the same day.

The timing is strategic. With the game’s launch less than 100 days away, the August 27 presentation is expected to build final momentum, answer long-standing questions about gameplay feel, and give players a clearer sense of the world they will soon explore.

Previous Grand Theft Auto titles have set records for sales and cultural impact; GTA V, released in 2013, remains one of the best-selling entertainment products of all time. Expectations for its successor are correspondingly high.

Viewers can already set reminders on Netflix for the August 27 premiere. Those without subscriptions will need only to wait until 9:00 p.m. ET the same day to watch the extended look for free on YouTube or the official Grand Theft Auto VIsite.

In either case, the presentation is poised to become one of the most watched gaming reveals of the year and a notable crossover between traditional game marketing and mainstream streaming entertainment.

What is clear is that Rockstar has chosen an unconventional path to show the next chapter of its flagship series, ensuring that the first extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI will itself become a talking point long before players get their hands on the finished game this November.
