Netflix has greenlit an untitled limited series spinoff of Bridgerton focused on the early life of Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The project marks the second prequel in the Shondaland-produced franchise following the 2023 success of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
Shonda Rhimes is writing, executive producing and co-showrunning the series with Nicholas Nardini, her collaborator on Queen Charlotte. This represents the first time Rhimes has written a show since creating that earlier limited series. Tom Verica, who directed and executive produced Queen Charlotte, returns in the same dual role. Shondaland’s Betsy Beers also serves as an executive producer.

The series will chronicle the formative years of young Violet, known in later life as the widowed matriarch of the Bridgerton family. In the main Bridgerton series, the character is portrayed by Ruth Gemmell. A younger version of Violet appeared in Queen Charlotte, played by Connie Jenkins-Greig. No casting announcements have been made for the new project, and it remains unclear whether Jenkins-Greig will reprise the role.
About the Series
Source material for the story exists in Violet in Bloom, a short novella by Julia Quinn included in the collection The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. The novella explores Violet’s romance with Edmund Bridgerton. While Queen Charlotte was largely an original creation, the Violet series draws more directly from Quinn’s existing writing.
Talk of additional Bridgerton prequels began shortly after Queen Charlotte launched to strong viewership in 2023. That series briefly ranked among Netflix’s most popular English-language titles and expanded the franchise’s historical scope by exploring the early lives of Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury and Violet. Director Tom Verica had previously indicated that other established characters were being considered for similar treatment.
The greenlight arrives as Bridgerton Season 5 continues production in London. That season centres on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling, marking the first time a same-sex romance takes centre stage in the main series. Earlier seasons remain popular on the platform, with Seasons 1 and 3 still appearing on Netflix’s most-watched lists.
Expanding the Bridgerton universe forms a central part of Netflix’s ongoing partnership with Shondaland. The franchise has generated significant revenue beyond streaming through consumer products and live experiences.
Netflix has invested in dedicated production infrastructure in the United Kingdom to support the series and its offshoots.
Rhimes’ renewed long-term overall deal with Netflix, signed earlier in 2026, provided additional momentum for the project. The Violet series is the first major greenlight under that agreement. Industry observers had anticipated a Violet-focused prequel as a logical next step, given the character’s central role in the Bridgerton family and the affectionate reception to her younger portrayal in Queen Charlotte.
The limited series format mirrors the structure of Queen Charlotte, allowing a self-contained exploration of Violet and Edmund’s relationship without requiring a multi-season commitment. Details regarding episode count, production timeline and release window have not yet been disclosed.
Lady Violet Bridgerton occupies a distinctive place in the franchise as the resilient mother who raises eight children after the death of her husband. Her story of love, loss and quiet strength has resonated with audiences across multiple seasons. The new series is expected to provide deeper context for the family dynamics that drive the main show.
As development continues, attention will turn to casting, particularly the actors chosen to portray the young Violet and Edmund. The project also raises the possibility of further appearances by characters from Queen Charlotte or the main series, though no such crossovers have been confirmed.

The announcement reinforces Netflix’s commitment to the Bridgerton brand as one of its flagship period drama properties. With Season 5 underway and the Violet prequel now officially ordered, the franchise continues to expand both forward and backward in its timeline, offering new entry points for existing fans and potential new viewers.
Further updates on the series, including title, cast and production schedule, are expected in the coming months as Shondaland and Netflix move the project into active development.
