Ronald Araujo believes his physical attributes and style of play make him well suited to the demands of the Premier League after completing a season-long loan move to Liverpool from Barcelona.

The Uruguay international joins the Reds for the 2026-27 campaign, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance, bringing considerable experience from one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The defender has been assigned the number 33 shirt and has already completed his training

Araujo has won La Liga three times with Barcelona and was named captain of the Spanish giants earlier this year. His move to England now presents the 27-year-old defender with an opportunity to test himself in a new league.

Speaking in his first interview with Liverpool, Araujo said he had no hesitation about accepting the move once the club expressed an interest in signing him.

“It happened really, really quickly, to be honest with you. It’s a huge thanks to Liverpool for making that process so quick and for getting in touch and for their interest.”

The defender added that conversations with Liverpool’s sporting director and head coach Andoni Iraola convinced him that the move represented the right step at this stage of his career.

“I had no doubts for a second about coming here. It’s a great club, a great institution and it’s a great opportunity for me to enjoy my football here.”

Araujo is particularly confident that his qualities will translate well to English football, pointing to the intensity and competitiveness of the Premier League as factors that could complement his game.

“No doubt at all. I think my attributes will suit this league down to the ground. I think the style of play in the English league should be perfect for my qualities as a player. It’s a league I’ve wanted to play in for a long time.”

The central defender offers Liverpool flexibility at the back. Primarily a centre-back, Araujo has also regularly operated at right-back during his Barcelona career, giving Iraola another option when managing the defensive structure.

His pace, strength, aggression in duels and ability to defend in wide areas could make that versatility particularly valuable in a league where defenders are frequently required to deal with both physical battles and transitions.

Araujo will also have the opportunity to work alongside Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, a prospect he described with considerable enthusiasm. “We all know what a great player Virgil is. He’s a real reference point for the team and he’s a kind of role model and reference for me personally as well,” he said.

Targeting Success at Anfield

Beyond adapting to English football, Araujo is arriving with ambitions of competing for major honours.

He described Liverpool as a club with enormous history and said he is eager to experience the atmosphere at Anfield and begin working with his new teammates. “I can’t wait to get started,” Araujo said. I’m very, very happy. I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history,”

The defender believes working alongside Van Dijk and Liverpool’s other defenders can help him continue developing while also strengthening the team.

“I’m looking forward to lining up alongside him hopefully and spending time with him both on the field and off it as well. With hard work, I think we can achieve good things together as a partnership and as a defence.”

For Liverpool, Araujo’s arrival provides not only an experienced central defender but also a player capable of covering at right-back. For the Uruguayan, meanwhile, the loan represents a chance to prove that his attributes can thrive in the Premier League while competing for trophies at one of England’s biggest clubs.
