Xabi Alonso says he wants to build a strong connection with Chelsea supporters after experiencing an emotional first appearance on the touchline at Stamford Bridge as the club’s new manager.
The Spaniard took charge at the iconic stadium in west London for the first time on Saturday afternoon as Chelsea rounded off their pre-season preparations with an impressive 3-1 victory over Spanish side Real Sociedad.
Morgan Rogers gave the Blues the perfect start, scoring just 11 minutes into the contest on his debut, before João Pedro took centre stage with a second-half brace to continue his outstanding form during the build-up to the new campaign.
The Brazilian has now scored seven goals in five pre-season appearances, maintaining the momentum he carried from last season and giving Alonso another significant attacking option ahead of his first competitive campaign in charge.
The victory was Chelsea’s third of pre-season, following wins over Western Sydney Wanderers and AC Milan. They also drew once and suffered defeats against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Italian giants Juventus as Alonso used the matches to assess his squad, see new arrivals and to establish his ideas.

For Alonso, however, the occasion at Stamford Bridge carried significance beyond the result. The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss admitted he was moved by the reception from the Chelsea faithful and the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Speaking after the match, Alonso described his first experience at Stamford Bridge as an emotional one and expressed his appreciation for the welcome he received from the supporters. “It was kind of emotional as well, to feel for the first time in the new home,” Alonso said. “A great reception from the supporters, to the team, to everyone, to the new staff and myself as well, so delighted.”
The Chelsea supporters quickly embraced their new manager, with chants of Alonso’s name ringing around Stamford Bridge during the friendly.
For a manager beginning a new chapter at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, the early backing could prove valuable as he attempts to impose his footballing philosophy on a squad with high expectations surrounding the new season.
Alonso made it clear that he does not simply want the supporters to admire his team from a distance. He wants to establish a relationship in which the players feed off the energy from the stands while giving supporters a style of football they can identify with.
“We want to create a good connection and to have that support. We want to give them good football so they will give us energy, so we connect and we have a good atmosphere and good energy here in the stadium. It will be a massive boost for the team.”

Fulham Awaits Alonso’s Competitive Debut
With pre-season now complete, Alonso’s attention turns to the Premier League, where Chelsea will begin their campaign next weekend with a short trip across London to face Fulham at Craven Cottage.
The fixture will represent Alonso’s first competitive match as Chelsea manager and provide a much clearer indication of how quickly his methods are taking hold.
The 44-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge with an impressive coaching record, having guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season without losing a single domestic league match. He also led Leverkusen to DFB-Pokal success that campaign.
Their only defeat that season came in the UEFA Europa League final, where Atalanta ended their remarkable unbeaten run with a 3-0 victory.
Alonso subsequently moved to Real Madrid at the start of the 2025-26 season but left midway through the campaign following a difficult spell in charge and reports of tensions within the dressing room.
His Chelsea tenure therefore offers an opportunity to rebuild his reputation at the highest level once again.
The early signs are encouraging, with Chelsea showing attacking intent and João Pedro continuing to find the net. But Alonso knows the real test begins when points, pressure and expectations arrive.
For now, his first Stamford Bridge experience has given him something he clearly values; the trust and enthusiasm of the supporters.
And if Alonso can translate that early connection into consistent performances and results, the emotional reception he received on his first night could become the foundation of a much bigger relationship between the manager, his players and the Chelsea faithful.
