The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the new trading week under pressure as investor activity weakened sharply, with both trading volume and turnover recording significant declines compared with the previous session.
At the close of trading on Monday, August 17, 2026, a total of 1,163,283 shares valued at GH¢4.45 million changed hands across the market. The performance represented a 43% decline in traded volume and a 15% drop in turnover compared with Friday, August 14.
The weaker trading activity came despite the GSE continuing to record impressive gains on a year-to-date basis, highlighting a mixed picture for investors as selected equities rallied while major market indices retreated.
Seven Gainers Fail to Lift the Market
A total of 28 listed equities participated in trading during the session, with seven recording price gains and six ending lower.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the biggest winner of the day after its share price jumped 9.88% to close at GH¢0.89. The strong performance placed the company firmly at the top of the gainers’ table as investors showed renewed interest in the stock.
Hords also delivered a strong performance, advancing 9.23%, while Intravenous Infusions gained 8.70%. Digicut Production & Advertising completed the leading group of gainers with a 7.69% appreciation.
The gains from these companies, however, were not enough to prevent the broader market from closing lower.
The mixed performance suggests that while investors continue to identify opportunities in individual stocks, broader market sentiment remained cautious during the opening session of the week.
Enterprise Group Suffers Biggest Loss
On the losing side, Enterprise Group recorded the sharpest decline, with its share price falling 9.58% to GH¢9.06.
Societe Generale Ghana followed closely, losing 7.85%, while Kasapreko declined by 5%. Ecobank Transnational also recorded a decline of 2.65%.
The sharp losses among some major counters contributed to the downward movement in the benchmark indices and reinforced concerns about the sustainability of recent market momentum.
The contrasting performances between the gainers and losers demonstrate the increasingly selective nature of trading on the GSE, with investors appearing to reposition their portfolios around individual company prospects.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Activity
Despite the overall decline in market activity, MTN Ghana remained the most actively traded equity during the session.
The telecommunications giant recorded 261,387 shares in traded volume, placing it ahead of CalBank, which registered 243,149 shares.
Intravenous Infusions followed with 193,096 shares, while Kasapreko recorded 171,117 shares.
The strong trading activity in these counters accounted for a significant portion of the day’s total volume, even as overall participation weakened compared with the previous trading session.
The figures indicate that investor interest has not disappeared from the market, but trading appears to have become concentrated in selected equities.
GSE Composite Index Falls 0.68%
The benchmark GSE Composite Index suffered a setback during the session, dropping by 104.78 points, equivalent to 0.68%, to close at 15,202.93 points.
The decline leaves the index with a 0.15% loss over the past week. However, the broader performance remains firmly positive, with the index recording a 1.82% gain over the past four weeks.
More significantly, the GSE Composite Index has delivered an impressive 73.35% year-to-date gain.
This means that despite Monday’s decline, investors who have remained exposed to the equities market since the beginning of the year have continued to enjoy substantial gains.
The latest decline could therefore represent a temporary pullback following the remarkable rally recorded by the Ghanaian equities market throughout 2026.
Financial Stocks Also Retreat
The GSE Financial Stocks Index also ended the session in negative territory.
The index declined by 1.11% to close at 8,027.06 points. Its performance represents a 0.57% decline over the past week and a 2.79% loss over the past four weeks.
Despite these recent setbacks, the financial stocks index remains up 72.73% year to date.
The performance highlights the strength of Ghana’s equity market over the longer term, even as investors contend with short-term volatility.
Market Capitalisation Remains Massive
The total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at approximately GH¢287.1 billion, equivalent to about US$26 billion.
The sizeable market capitalisation underscores the growing importance of the GSE as a platform for investment and capital formation in Ghana.
However, Monday’s weaker turnover and trading volume suggest that investors may be taking a more cautious approach following the substantial gains accumulated by the market.
Strong Yearly Gains Meet Fresh Market Pressure
The latest trading session presents a fascinating contrast for the Ghanaian equities market.
On one hand, the GSE continues to post exceptional year-to-date returns, with the Composite Index up more than 73%. On the other hand, the latest session recorded declining volume, falling turnover and losses across the major market indices.
For investors, the immediate focus is likely to be whether the decline represents a temporary correction or the beginning of a broader period of consolidation.
With several stocks still recording significant gains and trading concentrated in major counters such as MTN Ghana and CalBank, the GSE remains an active market despite Monday’s slowdown.
As trading continues through the week, investors will be watching closely to determine whether the market can regain momentum and push the benchmark index higher, or whether profit-taking and cautious positioning will continue to dominate activity.
