The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) delivered another mixed but largely positive session as investors pushed several listed equities higher, helping the benchmark market index advance despite a notable decline in trading activity.
At the close of trading, 31 listed equities participated in transactions, with 10 stocks recording gains compared with just five decliners. The performance reinforced the resilience of the local equities market, even as both trading volume and turnover weakened from the previous session.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) gained 67.28 points, representing a 0.45% increase, to close at 15,088.31 points. The latest rise keeps the benchmark index firmly above the 15,000-point psychological level and highlights the remarkable gains recorded by the exchange so far this year.
GSE Keeps Investors Watching
Despite the positive movement in the benchmark index, the overall trading session was less active than the previous trading day.
A total of 1,278,619 shares changed hands, generating a market value of GH¢6.39 million. Compared with Tuesday, August 25, trading volume declined by 30%, while turnover fell by 4%.
The weaker activity suggests that although several equities attracted buying interest, investors were not trading at the same intensity seen during the previous session.
Still, the number of gainers provided a major boost to market sentiment.
With 10 equities advancing against five losers, the session ended with a clear advantage for stocks that recorded price appreciation. The development could attract further attention from investors looking for opportunities in selected GSE-listed companies.
Digicut Leads the Rally
Digicut Production & Advertising emerged as the biggest winner of the session after its share price jumped by 10%.
The stock closed at GH¢0.22 per share, making it the strongest performer among the listed equities that gained during the session.
Its performance was closely followed by Dannex Ayrton Starwin, which climbed 9.87%. The pharmaceutical company continued to demonstrate strong price movement, placing it among the most closely watched stocks of the day.
Intravenous Infusions also posted an impressive gain, rising 6.67%, while Societe Generale Ghana increased by 6.19%.
The gains across these companies helped support the broader market and contributed to the 0.45% rise in the GSE Composite Index.
Enterprise Group Suffers Sharpest Fall
While several investors celebrated gains, others faced significant losses as five equities ended the session in negative territory.
Enterprise Group recorded the sharpest decline, falling by 8.91% to close at GH¢6.75 per share.
The steep decline placed Enterprise Group at the bottom of the session’s performance table and represented one of the most significant individual price movements recorded during the trading period.
Ecobank Transnational followed with a 2.16% decline, while TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana lost 1.19%.
SIC Insurance Company also slipped by 1.09%, adding to the group of stocks that weighed on the market during the session.
The contrasting performances demonstrate the highly selective nature of trading activity on the exchange, with investors appearing to favour some counters while reducing exposure to others.
Kasapreko Leads Trading Volume
Kasapreko emerged as the most actively traded equity by volume during the session.
A total of 212,356 Kasapreko shares changed hands, placing the company ahead of other heavily traded stocks.
Intravenous Infusions followed with 187,346 shares traded, while MTN Ghana recorded 166,946 shares.
CalBank rounded out the leading four with 128,465 shares changing hands.
The strong activity in these counters indicates that investor attention remained concentrated on selected equities, even though overall market volume declined significantly.
GSE Composite Index Remains Strong
The biggest headline from the session was arguably the continued strength of the GSE Composite Index.
After gaining 67.28 points, the index closed at 15,088.31 points. However, the latest increase came against short-term declines over the past several weeks.
The GSE-CI recorded a 0.54% loss over one week and a 1.9% decline over four weeks.
Despite these recent setbacks, the index remains up a remarkable 72.04% year to date.
That performance places the Ghanaian equities market among the strongest performers investors have been watching in 2026. The ability of the index to remain above 15,000 points could also become an important psychological indicator for market participants.
Financial Stocks Face Pressure
The financial sector did not enjoy the same momentum as the broader market.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) declined by 0.16% to close at 7,873.78 points.
The index has also experienced pressure over shorter periods, recording a 1.38% decline over one week and a 4.8% decline over four weeks.
Nevertheless, its year-to-date performance remains impressive at 69.43%.
The divergent movement between the GSE-CI and GSE-FSI suggests that gains in non-financial stocks are helping to support the broader market despite weakness among some financial counters.
Market Capitalisation Hits GH¢285.2 Billion
The total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at GH¢285.2 billion, equivalent to approximately US$25.5 billion.
The figure underlines the growing value of companies listed on the exchange and the increasing significance of the local capital market.
With the GSE Composite Index maintaining a strong year-to-date performance, investors will be watching closely to determine whether the market can sustain its momentum in the coming sessions.
Despite falling trading activity, buying interest in selected equities remains strong enough to push the broader GSE market higher.
