The summer transfer window in several European countries is heading towards a frantic conclusion, with clubs racing to complete their final pieces of business before the deadline. In England the deadline is at 23:00 BST (22:00 GMT) today, September 1, and 23:59GMT in Spain while the window has shut in France and Germany.
While the final hours of the window are traditionally dominated by late surprises, the biggest developing story is Manchester City’s pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, with the City reportedly opening talks over a deal for the Argentina international.
Chelsea had previously placed a deadline on any potential move for Fernandez and are now weighing up whether to sanction his departure to a direct Premier League rival.
City are understood to be prepared to pay more than the £120m valuation Chelsea initially placed on the midfielder.
The situation could trigger a chain reaction at Stamford Bridge. Should Fernandez leave, Chelsea have identified Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Roma’s Manu Kone as possible replacements, although retaining their influential midfielder remains an option.
The opening talks for Senegalese midfielder Camara is believed to have stalled because Chelsea dislikes the way Monaco are negotiating the deal.
Chelsea’s transfer strategy has already produced significant movement this summer, and the Fernandez situation could determine whether their squad is stronger or weaker when the window finally closes.
The Argentina midfielder has missed Chelsea’s last two games having being omitted from the squad in their wins against Luton Town and Brighton and Hove Albion with speculation around the player increasing.

City Lead the Deadline-Day Charge
Manchester City are not relying solely on the Fernandez pursuit. Enzo Maresca’s side have also agreed a £65m deal for Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye, strengthening their attacking options and hijacking the Senegalese attacker from Tottenham Hotspur who had agreed to a deal to bring him in.
City have further agreed a deal to sign Brazilian winger Allan Elias from Palmeiras, with the transfer potentially reaching £34.2m. The moves underline their determination to reshape the squad after a summer of considerable activity.
Another major City story involves Jack Grealish, who is set to return to Everton on a season-long loan. The England international spent last season at Everton and is now poised for another temporary spell away from the Etihad Stadium.
Everton, meanwhile, are among the busiest clubs on deadline day. They have agreed a £40m deal for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun, while their £65m sale of Ndiaye to City represents another significant piece of business.
The Toffees are also discussing the future of right-back Nathan Patterson, with talks underway over a possible move to Torino.
Juventus, Arsenal and United Face Late Decisions
Juventus have agreed a season-long loan for Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade, adding another twist to Newcastle’s deadline-day plans.
Manchester United’s activity could depend on whether Joshua Zirkzee finds a new club. Juventus remain interested in the Netherlands forward, but their pursuit is understood to be linked to Jonathan David potentially leaving for Atletico Madrid.
United would prefer a permanent sale for Zirkzee, although a loan with an obligation to buy could also be considered. His departure could create room for the club to reinforce either the forward line or left-back position.
Arsenal are also facing uncertainty over goalkeeper Tommy Setford, whose proposed loan move to Las Palmas has stalled. The 20-year-old could remain at Arsenal unless another option emerges before the deadline.
The Gunners are also expected to send forward Ethan Nwaneri to Borussia Dortmund on loan, giving the youngster an opportunity for regular first-team football after spending last season on another loan spell in France with Olympique de Marseille.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest have agreed a £22m deal for Crystal Palace right-back Daniel Munoz, while Omari Hutchinson is set to join AC Milan on loan from Nottingham Forest.
Deals Could Continue Beyond 23:00
The official Premier League and EFL deadline is 23:00 BST, but clubs can still complete transfers after that time if they submit a deal sheet by 21:00 BST.
That provision could prove crucial as clubs attempt to push complicated negotiations over the line.
Fulham are close to signing Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson, while Leeds are pursuing OGC Nice defender Melvin Bard. Aston Villa are also expected to formally complete deals for Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Paris Saint-Germain forward Ibrahim Mbaye with both players present at Villa Park during their 1-0 loss to Arsenal yesterday.
At Chelsea, Marc Guiu has completed a permanent move to RB Leipzig, while goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is also attracting interest from Como.
With several clubs still balancing incoming transfers against departures, deadline day promises to remain volatile until the final paperwork is completed.
But above all, the Enzo Fernandez saga has the potential to define the closing hours. If City succeed in taking Chelsea’s midfield cornerstone to the Etihad, the transfer would not only represent one of the window’s biggest deals but could force Chelsea into a late scramble for a replacement.
