Accra Hearts of Oak will temporarily relocate their home matches to the University of Ghana Stadium for the opening stages of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, the club has confirmed.

The Phobians have reached an agreement with the managers of the Legon-based facility to host their Matchday 1 and Matchday 3 fixtures as renovations continue at the Accra Sports Stadium ahead of Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia in September.

Hearts of Oak confirmed the development in a statement, explaining that the temporary switch was necessitated by the unavailability of their traditional home venue. “Accra Hearts of Oak SC has made temporary arrangements with the University of Ghana Stadium for the use of the facility for our Matchday 1 and Matchday 3 fixtures,” the club stated.

The Accra Sports Stadium is expected to undergo preparations to ensure the facility and its pitch are ready for the Black Stars’ upcoming international assignment, leaving Hearts without access to the venue at the start of the domestic campaign.

The decision means the Phobians will begin the new league season away from the Accra Sports Stadium, although the University of Ghana Stadium is a familiar venue for the club and its supporters.

Hearts have staged several significant home games at the University of Ghana Stadium in recent seasons, making the temporary move less disruptive than having to play at a completely unfamiliar ground.

The club also used the opportunity to acknowledge the support of its fan base as the team prepares for another Premier League campaign, saying: “We appreciate the understanding and continued support of our cherished supporters.”

Hearts Begin GPL Campaign Against Berekum Chelsea

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League is scheduled to begin this weekend, with Hearts opening their campaign against Berekum Chelsea.

The Phobians are scheduled to host Chelsea on Sunday, September 6, in one of the headline fixtures of Matchday 1. The match is scheduled for a 3:00pm kick-off and has been selected for television coverage.

With the University of Ghana Stadium serving as the club’s temporary home for Matchday 1, Hearts will look to make a strong start in front of their supporters as they begin their bid to challenge for the league title.

Their second league fixture will take them away from home, with the Phobians set to travel to face Bibiani Gold Stars on Matchday 2.

They will then return to Accra for Matchday 3, when they host Bechem United. That fixture will also be played at the University of Ghana Stadium under the temporary arrangement announced by the club.

The arrangement is expected to remain limited to the two specified home fixtures, with Hearts set to assess their options as the Accra Sports Stadium becomes available again.

The 2026/27 Premier League season will run from the weekend of September 4-7, 2026, through May 28-31, 2027, with Hearts among the clubs aiming to challenge reigning champions Medeama SC for domestic honours.
