Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane believes he has done everything within his power to put himself in contention for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but accepts that the final decision now rests with the journalists who will vote to determine the winner.

The England captain enjoyed the most prolific season of his career, combining extraordinary goalscoring numbers for Bayern Munich with a strong individual campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kane scored six goals as England finished third in the tournament, their best World Cup finish since winning the competition in 1966.

“Of course, now it is out of my hands, it is down to the voters and the people who decide it. The season I had was my best season by far, and we’ll have to wait and see.”

The 33-year-old striker said to be in contention for the prestigious individual accolade organized by France Football makes him happy though it is time that will tell. “I’m happy that I am in contention, so we will have to wait and see.”

Kane scored 73 goals for club and country including his tally at the FIFA World Cup that concluded two months ago.

Kane’s club numbers provide a compelling argument. Ths former Tottenham Hotspur captain scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern during the 2025/26 campaign, including 36 Bundesliga goals, 14 in the Champions League and 10 in the DFB-Pokal. He also added a goal in the German Super Cup.

His goals helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, while he also claimed the European Golden Shoe after finishing as Europe’s leading scorer with 36 league goals. It was his second Golden Shoe, putting him behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the number of wins.

Mbappé’s World Cup Heroics Strengthen His Case

Kane’s strongest competition could come from Kylian Mbappé, whose remarkable individual campaign continued into the World Cup despite Real Madrid ending the season without a major trophy for a second consecutive year.

Mbappé scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid, finishing as LaLiga’s leading scorer with 25 goals and winning the Pichichi Trophy for a second season in a row. He also finished top of the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals.

The French forward then produced an extraordinary World Cup campaign. Mbappé scored 10 goals in seven appearances, won the adidas Golden Boot and became the first men’s player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice.

His tournament tally also took him to 22 World Cup goals, making him the competition’s all-time leading scorer. “I made history this summer in the most prestigious competition, but there’s still a long way to go,” Mbappé said.

Just like Harry Kane, the French talisman said despite having a strong case, the final decision rests on the king makers. “This might be a good year for the Ballon d’Or, but the journalists vote, and they will decide. I only focus on doing my best.”

That combination makes Mbappé’s case particularly difficult to dismiss. He does not have the same collection of team trophies as some of his rivals, but his individual output across club and international football was exceptional.

Yamal Adds A Trophy-heavy Argument

Lamine Yamal is another major contender after a season in which individual brilliance was matched by collective success.

The Barcelona teenager helped his club complete a domestic treble and was named LaLiga’s Player of the Season after registering 16 league goals and 11 assists. Yamal finished the campaign with 24 goals for the club across all competitions.

His biggest advantage, however, came on the international stage. Yamal was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning side, becoming one of the youngest players ever to win football’s biggest international prize.

He therefore enters the Ballon d’Or conversation with a combination of club success, individual influence and World Cup glory.

The teenager also has history with the award. He finished second behind Ousmane Dembélé in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting, meaning another podium finish would further underline his rapid rise among the game’s elite.

The 2026 race is particularly intriguing because the Ballon d’Or criteria place individual performances and decisive impact first, followed by collective achievements and trophies, with sporting class and fair play third.

The men’s award is decided by 100 journalists representing the top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings, with each voter ranking 10 players from the 30-man shortlist.

The shortlist is due to be announced on September 8, with the winner set to be crowned in London on October 26.

The ceremony will mark the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, which was created by France Football in 1956 and first won by England legend Stanley Matthews.

With Kane offering extraordinary goalscoring numbers and trophies, Mbappé combining record-breaking scoring with World Cup brilliance, and Yamal presenting perhaps the strongest blend of youth, trophies and influence, the 2026 Ballon d’Or race promises to be one of the most fiercely contested in recent years.

The debate may ultimately come down to one question: what matters more, individual dominance, international glory or the complete package of performance and trophies?
