The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed a surge in trading activity as investors exchanged shares worth GH¢48.89 million in a single session, even as the benchmark index continued to lose ground.
A total of 8.11 million shares changed hands at the close of trading, representing a 418% jump in volume compared with the previous trading session on Wednesday, September 16.
Turnover delivered an even bigger surprise. The GH¢48.89 million recorded represented a 546% increase over the previous session, signalling a sharp increase in the value of transactions moving through the equities market.
The surge comes at a time when the broader market has been under pressure, creating an unusual picture of intense trading activity alongside declining benchmark performance.
GSE Composite Index extends recent losses
Despite the massive increase in trading, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) fell by 73.42 points, equivalent to 0.52%, to close at 14,088.52 points.
The decline adds to a difficult short-term stretch for the benchmark. Over the past week, the index has lost 4.09%, while its four-week performance shows a deeper decline of 6.48%.
Yet the longer-term picture remains significantly different.
The GSE-CI is still up 60.64% since the beginning of the year, highlighting just how much ground the market has gained despite the recent correction.
That contrast is becoming increasingly important as investors assess whether the latest weakness represents a temporary pullback after strong gains or a broader shift in market momentum.
MTN dominates trading volume
MTN Ghana emerged as the clear driver of activity, accounting for 7.26 million of the 8.11 million shares traded during the session.
The telecom giant’s volume dwarfed activity across most other listed companies and accounted for the overwhelming majority of shares exchanged.
Digicut Production & Advertising followed with 396,222 shares, while CalBank recorded 125,994 shares. Intravenous Infusions also featured among the more actively traded equities with 56,226 shares changing hands.
The concentration of volume in MTN Ghana means the overall market’s huge increase in traded shares was heavily influenced by activity in a single stock.
That makes the headline jump in market volume significant, but it also points to the need to look beneath the aggregate numbers to understand where investor attention was actually concentrated.
Digicut leads the gainers
While the broader index slipped, five equities recorded price gains during the session.
Digicut Production & Advertising posted the strongest advance, rising 7.69% to close at GH¢0.42 per share.
Kasapreko followed with a 5.06% gain, while Ecobank Transnational increased by 3.23%. CalBank also moved higher, recording a 1.43% appreciation.
The performance shows that the session was not characterised by universal selling pressure. Some stocks continued to attract buying interest even as the benchmark index declined.
With five gainers matched by five losers, the market produced a balanced count at the individual stock level, although the magnitude of declines in some counters contributed to the negative movement in the overall index.
Hords suffers sharpest decline
Hords recorded the steepest fall among the decliners, dropping 8.96% to GH¢0.61 per share.
Clydestone Ghana followed with a 5.05% decline, while SIC Insurance Company fell 4.79%.
MTN Ghana, despite dominating trading volume, also ended the session lower. Its share price declined 1.96%.
The movement in MTN Ghana is particularly notable because of the stock’s enormous contribution to total volume. Heavy trading in the counter therefore occurred alongside a decline in its share price, adding another layer to the day’s market story.
Financial stocks buck the broader trend
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) provided a contrasting signal, gaining 0.51% to close at 7,427.45 points.
Even with the daily increase, the financial index remains down 3.19% over one week and 5.67% over four weeks.
Its year-to-date performance, however, remains firmly positive at 59.83%.
The divergence between the GSE-CI and GSE-FSI suggests that financial stocks showed some resilience during the session, even as the broader market recorded a decline.
Market remains sharply higher year-to-date
The latest trading session leaves the GSE with market capitalisation of approximately GH¢268.2 billion, equivalent to about US$23.3 billion.
The numbers present a market caught between two very different narratives.
Recent sessions have brought noticeable pressure on the major indices, but the exchange remains substantially higher than it was at the start of the year.
The explosive increase in turnover also demonstrates that investors have not stepped away from the market entirely. Instead, substantial volumes are still changing hands even amid recent price declines.
The key question now is whether the surge in activity marks renewed accumulation in selected stocks or reflects heightened repositioning as investors respond to recent market movements.
Either way, the GH¢48.9 million session has injected fresh attention into the GSE. With the Composite Index under short-term pressure and individual stocks producing sizeable price swings, the next trading sessions could provide a clearer indication of where investor sentiment is heading.
