Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold have returned to the England squad after being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup roster, with the pair handed an opportunity to re-establish themselves as the Three Lions begin another UEFA Nations League campaign.

Chelsea forward and Real Madrid defender are among the headline inclusions in Tuchel’s latest squad, which also features first senior international call-ups for Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.

England will face Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia during the extended September-October international window, with two fixtures against the Czech Republic forming part of their four-match Nations League schedule.

Palmer’s recall comes after Tuchel pointed to an improvement in the 24-year-old’s attacking output at Chelsea.

The England manager said the forward had regained his form, making his selection a natural consequence of his recent performances. “Cole has his start that he always had but he has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back,” Tuchel said.

Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, returns after missing the World Cup, with Tuchel confirming that the Real Madrid player will be used specifically at right-back rather than in midfield. “He had a good start in two positions for Real Madrid but he comes as a right-back for us,” Tuchel said.

Tuchel Demands Performances From Returning Stars

The England boss also made clear that returning to the squad does not guarantee either player a permanent place in his set up.

Tuchel said both have an opportunity to demonstrate their value, describing their situation as a fight for selection. “They had a good start to the season, they never did something wrong. We just chose different players,” Tuchel explained.

On Alexander-Arnold, Tuchel added that “it is now time to fight for his place. He always said he is up for a fight, he always said he is up to fight for his place, especially for England so it is on him to prove.”

The manager also stressed that the door remains open to players outside the current squad, provided they continue to perform and contribute positively to the team environment. “The door is always open, first and foremost through performance and then on the same level through behaviour and commitment to the team spirit,” he said.

Ngumoha and Scott represent the fresh faces in the squad, having previously impressed Tuchel during preparations without being part of the main senior group.

Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White was also reportedly close to selection, while Fulham youngster Josh King remains on the manager’s radar.

England Begin New Nations League Challeng

Tuchel enters the new campaign seeking to build on England’s recent competitive run while maintaining the squad culture developed during the World Cup.

He described the Nations League opener against Spain as a significant test, particularly against the reigning world champions.

“We feel the gap is closing, we feel we are close, we want to prove a point,” Tuchel said ahead of the meeting with Spain.

The England squad includes regulars such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Jordan Pickford, while players including Eberechi Eze, Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon retain their places.

The squad has also been affected by injuries, with Tuchel noting that several members of the World Cup group are unavailable. Reece James, Dean Henderson, John Stones, Jordan Henderson and Djed Spence are among those he said cannot join the latest camp.

England’s Nations League campaign will therefore combine continuity with opportunities for players seeking to establish themselves.

For Palmer and Alexander-Arnold, the fixtures against Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic provide their first opportunity to respond on the pitch after their World Cup omission.
