The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) delivered another mixed trading session as Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) emerged as the standout gainer while SIC Insurance Company suffered the market’s sharpest decline.
Trading activity painted a contrasting picture. Although the number of shares traded fell by 22% compared with the previous session, the total value of transactions jumped by 125% to GH¢7.30 million. The shift suggests that investors traded fewer shares but moved significantly more money through the market.
A total of 1,522,129 shares changed hands at the close of trading, compared with the previous session on Tuesday, September 22. The market’s total capitalisation stood at GH¢273.1 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23.6 billion.
Ecobank Transnational Leads the Charge
ETI stole the spotlight after its share price climbed 7.41% to close at GH¢1.74. The gain made the financial institution the strongest performer among the four equities that advanced during the session.
The movement added fresh momentum to ETI as financial stocks continued to play a visible role in shaping the day’s market performance.
Ecobank Ghana also joined the gainers, advancing 2.63%. CalBank followed with a 1.43% increase, while GCB Bank edged higher by 0.15%.
The performance of these banking stocks helped cushion the broader market against heavier losses recorded across several other counters.
The gains also came against a backdrop of uneven market performance. While the benchmark index remained almost unchanged during the session, the financial stocks index recorded a more noticeable increase.
SIC Insurance Takes the Biggest Hit
The other side of the market told a considerably different story.
SIC Insurance emerged as the biggest loser, with its share price falling 7.92% to GH¢5.00. The sharp decline placed the insurer at the bottom of the day’s performance table and created a stark contrast with ETI’s strong advance.
Intravenous Infusions also recorded a significant decline, dropping 5.66%. Clydestone Ghana followed with a 4.04% fall, while Kasapreko declined 2.75%.
Seven listed equities ended the session in negative territory, compared with four gainers.
The contrasting performances highlight the selective nature of current trading activity on the exchange. Investors appeared to be moving into some counters while reducing exposure to others, producing a market where individual share-price movements were far more dramatic than the headline index suggested.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Volume
MTN Ghana remained the most actively traded stock by volume, accounting for 732,899 shares during the session.
Kasapreko followed with 255,689 shares, while CalBank recorded 153,891 shares. Intravenous Infusions completed the leading group with 125,039 traded shares.
The concentration of activity in a handful of counters shows that investor attention remains heavily focused on selected large and liquid stocks.
MTN Ghana’s trading dominance was particularly notable, accounting for nearly half of all shares traded during the session. Such activity continues to make the telecommunications giant an important contributor to overall market liquidity.
GSE Composite Index Barely Moves
Despite the sharp movements in individual stocks, the GSE Composite Index remained virtually unchanged.
The GSE-CI gained 1.24 points, equivalent to 0.01%, to close at 14,287.14 points. Its latest performance leaves the index with a 0.46% loss over the past week and a 4.89% decline over four weeks.
The longer-term picture, however, remains significantly stronger. The index has gained 62.9% since the beginning of the year, maintaining a substantial year-to-date advance despite recent bouts of weakness.
That performance shows how much ground the local equity market has covered during the year, even as recent sessions have brought renewed volatility.
Financial Stocks Deliver Stronger Showing
The GSE Financial Stocks Index provided a brighter spot during the session.
The GSE-FSI climbed 1.59% to 7,595.52 points, extending its one-week gain to 1.67%. The index, however, remained down 3.69% over four weeks.
Its year-to-date performance remained firmly positive at 63.44%, reflecting the strong contribution of financial equities to the broader market’s gains in 2026.
The divergence between the GSE-CI and GSE-FSI also underlines the importance of banking stocks in the exchange’s current performance. With ETI, Ecobank Ghana, CalBank and GCB Bank all recording gains, the financial sector provided some support against losses elsewhere.
Value Surges Despite Lower Volume
Perhaps the most striking feature of the session was the sharp increase in turnover despite the decline in trading volume.
The 1.52 million shares traded generated GH¢7.30 million in market value, representing a 125% improvement from the previous trading session. At the same time, volume fell by 22%.
That combination points to a session in which larger-value transactions played a bigger role in determining total turnover.
As the GSE continues to build on its substantial year-to-date gains, investors are watching closely for signs of whether recent market weakness will persist or give way to renewed buying interest.
The latest session offered no single direction across the market. ETI surged, SIC Insurance tumbled, financial stocks strengthened and turnover jumped sharply. Beneath the relatively flat Composite Index, investors were clearly making decisive moves across individual counters.
