Defending Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC defeated debutants Port City FC 1-0 in their outstanding fixture on Wednesday to bring the newcomers’ unbeaten start to an end.
Kelvin Nkrumah scored the only goal of the game in first-half stoppage time at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa as Medeama maintained their own unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season and go joint-top of the league log with FC Samartex 1996.
The result means Medeama have now gone four matches without defeat as they continue their defence of the league title.
Port City, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat since gaining promotion to the top flight after an impressive opening three matches.
The newly promoted side had won twice and drawn once before Wednesday’s encounter, making an encouraging start to their maiden Premier League campaign.
Their most notable result came on matchday three when they secured a victory over 2024-25 champions Bibiani Gold Stars, further underlining their competitive start to life in the top flight.
However, Medeama proved difficult to break down and secured the crucial points despite Port City remaining in the contest for long periods.
Medeama Make Most of Crucial Opportunity
The match was originally scheduled for an earlier date but was postponed because of Medeama’s participation in the CAF Champions League.
The Yellow and Mauves had to balance their domestic commitments with their continental campaign, which eventually came to an end in the first round following their elimination 4-1 on aggregate by TP Mazembe.
With their Champions League campaign now over, Medeama can turn their full attention to the domestic competition as they seek to defend the league crown they won last season.
Their victory over Port City was settled by Nkrumah’s timely intervention just before the interval.
The midfielder found the breakthrough in stoppage time at the end of the first half, giving Medeama a 1-0 advantage going into the break.
Port City returned for the second half needing a response, but their task became considerably more difficult when they were reduced to 10 men.
Ransford Lartey was shown a straight red card in the 66th minute, leaving the debutants with more than 20 minutes to play a man down.
Medeama were unable to add to their advantage, but the single goal was enough to secure all three points and extend their unbeaten run.
For Port City, the defeat represents their first setback in what has otherwise been a promising introduction to Ghana’s top division.
The result also gives Medeama an important boost as the champions begin to concentrate exclusively on their domestic title defence.
With four games now played, Medeama remain unbeaten, while Port City will look to recover quickly and build on the positive performances that characterised their opening weeks in the Premier League.
