AFC Bournemouth maintained their perfect start to their UEFA Europa League campaign with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Italian giants AC Milan at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday night.
The English side delivered an impressive performance to claim their third consecutive victory in the competition, strengthening their position among the early frontrunners as they continue their historic European debut.
Bournemouth have collected all nine available points from their opening three matches, placing them in an exclusive group of five teams yet to drop points in the league phase.
Benfica, Bayer Leverkusen, Ferencvaros and Olympiacos are the other sides to have recorded three wins from three games.
The Cherries took control of the contest through two first-half penalties converted by Patrick Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier, while Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s dismissal left the visitors facing an uphill battle for much of the encounter.

Maignan was sent off in the 28th minute after committing a foul that denied Bournemouth a clear goalscoring opportunity. The incident also resulted in the second penalty of the evening, which Tavernier converted to extend the hosts’ advantage and leave Milan with ten men.
Bournemouth had already taken the lead through Kluivert’s penalty before Tavernier doubled their advantage, putting Marco Rose’s men in a commanding position before the interval.
With Milan struggling to recover from the numerical disadvantage, Bournemouth continued to threaten after the break and eventually added a third goal through substitute Amine Adli, who struck six minutes from full-time to seal a memorable victory.
Cherries Strengthen European Credentials
The result further underlined Bournemouth’s impressive adaptation to European football, with the Premier League club making the most of their maiden campaign on the continental stage.

Their ability to combine defensive discipline with attacking efficiency has proved decisive in their opening fixtures, and Thursday’s victory over one of Europe’s established clubs represents another significant milestone in their campaign.
Recording three successive wins without dropping a point gives Bournemouth a strong platform as the league phase progresses. Maintaining that consistency could put them in an advantageous position to secure direct qualification for the round of 16 and avoid the additional demands of the knockout phase play-offs.
However, the Cherries will need to sustain their early momentum against increasingly difficult opposition. Their perfect record offers encouragement, but the remaining fixtures will provide a more comprehensive test of their ambitions and ability to compete deep into the tournament.
Milan Face Growing Qualification Pressure
For Milan, meanwhile, the defeat represents a damaging setback in a campaign that has so far failed to deliver the consistency required to challenge for a comfortable qualification position.
The Italian side’s loss leaves them 24th in the Europa League league-phase standings with three points from three matches, having recorded one victory and suffered two defeats.

Maignan’s dismissal proved a major turning point, forcing Milan to reorganise and play a substantial portion of the match with ten men. Nevertheless, the scale of the defeat leaves them with little room for further mistakes as they seek to improve their position.
Milan must produce stronger results in their subsequent fixtures if they hope to finish among the top eight teams and secure automatic qualification for the round of 16. Failure to do so could force them into the play-offs, while continued poor performances would put their chances of reaching the knockout stage altogether at risk.
Under the Europa League’s league-phase format, teams finishing ninth to 24th advance to the knockout phase play-offs, while those outside the top 24 are eliminated. With Milan currently occupying the final play-off position, further dropped points could quickly leave them vulnerable to falling out of contention.
The Rossoneri therefore face a crucial period in their campaign, with upcoming matches likely to determine whether they can recover their footing or allow their European ambitions to unravel.
Bournemouth, by contrast, can approach their next assignment with renewed confidence after dismantling one of the competition’s most recognisable names.
Their third consecutive victory has established them as a side to watch, although the challenge now is to turn an outstanding opening run into sustained progress in Europe.
