The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed September on a weaker note, with the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) recording a 5.41% decline over the four-week period despite maintaining a strong year-to-date performance.
The GSE-CI edged up by 23.94 points, equivalent to 0.17%, during the final trading session to close at 14,141.56 points. The modest daily improvement, however, was not enough to reverse the losses accumulated throughout the month.
The index ended the week down 1.02%, while its four-week performance showed a 5.41% decline. Despite the monthly setback, the GSE-CI retained a substantial 61.24% gain since the beginning of the year.
September Ends With Market Under Pressure
The September performance highlights a sharp contrast between the GSE’s strong year-to-date rally and its more difficult recent trading pattern.
After gaining significantly during the earlier months of the year, the market entered the final stretch of September under selling pressure. The 5.41% four-week decline suggests that investors became more cautious as the month progressed, even though the broader market remained substantially higher than its end-2025 level.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also recorded a mixed performance. The index increased by 0.69% during the final session to close at 7,554.56 points. However, it posted a 0.54% weekly decline and a 3.89% four-week loss.
Its year-to-date gain remained strong at 62.56%, reflecting the substantial appreciation recorded by financial-sector stocks during the year.
The latest figures therefore show that the September weakness has not erased the gains accumulated across the wider market in 2026. Instead, the month ended with investors facing a period of consolidation after the strong rally recorded earlier in the year.
Trading Activity Slumps On Final Session
Trading activity also weakened significantly on the final day of the month.
A total of 5,122,887 shares changed hands, representing a market value of GH¢25.33 million. Compared with the previous trading session on Tuesday, September 29, trading volume declined by 39%, while turnover fell by 50%.
The decline in activity points to a quieter close to the month, despite continued participation across several listed equities.
Thirty GSE-listed equities participated in trading during the session. However, only four recorded gains, while eight ended the day lower.
The relatively small number of gainers compared with losers reflected the uneven performance across the market as investors repositioned their portfolios at the end of September.
Despite the weaker monthly performance, the GSE’s overall market capitalization remained substantial at GH¢270.8 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23.1 billion.
Ecobank Leads The Day’s Gainers
Ecobank Transnational emerged as the strongest gainer on the final trading day, with its share price climbing 6.79% to close at GH¢1.73.
The performance placed the stock firmly ahead of the other gainers and provided some support to the broader market during the session.
Kasapreko followed with a 1.66% increase, while Digicut Production & Advertising gained 0.28%. Ecobank Ghana also recorded a marginal 0.03% increase.
The limited number of advancing stocks shows how selective the day’s buying activity was. While some counters attracted demand, several other equities faced substantial selling pressure.
GOIL Leads Decliners As Stocks Retreat
Ghana Oil Company emerged as the biggest decliner, falling 7.21% to GH¢5.66 per share.
Societe Generale Ghana followed with a 5.82% decline, while SIC Insurance Company dropped 4.76%. CalBank also came under pressure, falling 1.41%.
The declines added to the subdued tone surrounding the market at the close of September.
The performance of these counters also demonstrates the differing fortunes among listed companies, with investors showing stronger demand for some stocks while reducing exposure to others.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Volume
MTN Ghana remained the most actively traded equity during the session, recording 3.51 million shares.
CalBank followed with 1.04 million shares, while Intravenous Infusions recorded 165,273 shares. Kasapreko completed the leading group with 112,238 shares traded.
MTN Ghana’s volume was particularly significant, accounting for a large share of the total 5.12 million shares traded during the session.
As September closes, the GSE enters the final quarter of 2026 carrying substantial gains despite the recent correction. The 61.24% year-to-date increase in the GSE-CI and 62.56% gain in the GSE-FSI indicate that the market’s broader performance remains considerably stronger than its September results suggest.
The immediate challenge is whether the market can regain momentum after the 5.41% four-week decline or whether investors will continue to take a more cautious approach as trading moves into October.
