Rubio Downplays Removal Of US Bombers From UK Base

State Department Defends Decision To Revoke Chinese Student Visas

U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has downplayed the significance of the removal of American B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in England, saying the move should not be directly linked to a suspected terror plot targeting the US-run military base.

The bombers were redeployed to their home stations in the United States after British authorities arrested people in connection with an alleged plot near the base, which had recently been used by the US for strikes against Iran. The Pentagon confirmed the aircraft had left Fairford but maintained that the US bomber force remained capable of conducting precision strikes globally.

Speaking to reporters before departing for a multi-stop diplomatic mission, Rubio said that the Pentagon was regularly shifting military assets around the world based on operational requirements. “I wouldn’t just directly tie that to the move that was made,” Rubio said.

“It’s not unusual to see rotations happen and moving into the different parts of the world based on exercises, redeployment, changing out and new people coming in, in planes coming in, old planes going out. So, birds are changing all the time.”

Rubio’s comments came after several people were arrested in Britain over an alleged plot linked to RAF Fairford. Five British men were arrested near the base on September 27 and later released on bail, while a sixth man, a British-Iranian dual national, was arrested days later and also released on bail. British counter-terrorism police said petrol was found in vehicles involved in the incident, although no explosive devices were discovered.

RAF Fairford is one of the few European facilities capable of accommodating US heavy bombers such as the B-1. The base has been used during the current conflict involving Iran, although Britain’s permission for US operations from its territory has been limited to defensive strikes.

The sudden redeployment therefore attracted attention because of the base’s role in supporting US military operations in the Middle East. A NATO military source said Iran continued to pose an acute threat to US assets in Britain, while US officials have stressed that the redeployment does not mean American strike capabilities have been reduced globally.

Vice President JD Vance offered a somewhat different emphasis, saying the decision to bring the bombers home was made out of caution following the investigation into the alleged terror plot. “What you saw there is, the Secretary of War, out of an abundance of caution, trying to protect our guys,” Vance said.

“We do feel with some confidence that the Iranians are, you know, they’re trying to do what the Iranian state has done for 49 years, which is engage in acts of terrorism against the United States and against a lot of other people as well. So, we are being extremely cautious.”

Iran has denied involvement in the alleged plot. Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi has rejected accusations linking Tehran to the incident.

Beyond the security situation in Britain, Rubio also addressed a number of international issues during his interaction with reporters.

He said that Washington was monitoring a case in Russia involving an employee of a plague research institute in Siberia who had developed pneumonia of an unknown cause. Russian authorities had quarantined a hospital and were monitoring people who had been in contact with the employee.

Rubio said that the US did not currently have cause for alarm but was watching the situation closely because an unidentified illness could spread quickly. He noted that travel between Russia and the United States was already limited.

Rubio Comments On Renewed Fighting In Yemen

The Secretary of state also commented on renewed fighting in Yemen, saying Washington expected the Saudi-backed Yemeni government to launch an offensive against Iran-aligned Houthi rebels after the group captured additional territory.

Rubio said Saudi Arabia and the United States have a defence agreement but declined to provide details on whether the coalition’s latest operation was coordinated with Washington.

He said Saudi Arabia had the right to defend itself following attacks by the Houthis and that the coalition’s response was expected.

The renewed violence in Yemen has added another layer to the wider regional tensions confronting the Trump administration as Washington balances security commitments to its allies with concerns over escalation.

Rubio said the Saudi-backed government’s offensive was a response to Houthi attacks and efforts to regain territory lost during the conflict. The United States has so far indicated that it supports Saudi Arabia’s right to self-defence under its bilateral security relationship, while avoiding publicly confirming direct participation in the latest strikes.

The escalation marks a significant deterioration after years in which major front lines in Yemen had remained largely frozen following a ceasefire. The renewed conflict has also raised concerns over security around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
