Meek Mill Apologizes For Filming A Video In Ghana’s Presidential Palace

Meek Mill

The US rapper, Meek Mill has apologized for secretly filming a music video in Ghana’s presidential palace, also known as Jubilee House.

The star caused an uproar with the short video, where he was seen in different places at the presidency known as the Jubilee House, from the frontage, through the main corridors, in the main conference hall, at a point positioned behind the presidential podium, and later in a sitting area rapping.

He was accused of “desecrating” Jubilee House, while MPs raised questions about the potential security risks.

In a statement, Mill said he would take responsibility for his mistake.

“To the people of Ghana, no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana.

“The fastest way to make a connection is thru music and I wanted to do that by displaying art. I’m in my 30s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle”.

He added that officials for Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, may not have been aware he was shooting a music video, saying the set-up had been “a small camera and a kid”.

The president’s office has not commented on the story, and Mill has removed his video from Instagram.

Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams in South Philadelphia, traveled to Ghana last month, after learning in an ancestry test that he was 18% Ghanaian.

He performed at the Afronation concert in Accra, over the Christmas holidays, rode dirt bikes in the city streets, and was later invited to see Jubilee House.

The footage he filmed during his visit was uploaded to Instagram on Sunday, provoking outrage in the West African nation.

He continued tweeting, saying;

“In America, we didn’t know this existed and we’re excited to show it because they don’t show Ghana on our media much! So I’ll take responsibility for my mistake! Not intentional.

“We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa. What I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the office also!”.

American rapper Meek Mill is currently trending on social media after a teaser of his yet-to-be-released music video showed scenes of him at different places at Ghana’s presidency.

The rapper on late Sunday, January 8, 2023; posted an Instagram reel announcing that he was set to release a new track.

However, Ghanaians are not happy with the location of his video shoot as many have dragged the president and the rapper on Twitter.

The MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa whose NDC party is in opposition to the President’s National Patriotic Party, said he would call for an inquiry into the incident when Parliament returns from recess.

“All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately. How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively? Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high-security installation?”.

Following the heat from social media, the philanthropist is reported to have deleted the controversial video.

Some of the major highlights of his time in Ghana were a rough riding power bike session, claims of his phone having been pickpocketed at an event, fighting off hoodlums before getting on stage to perform, and meeting with the president at Jubilee House.
