International music star and humanitarian activist Rocky Dawuni in an interview with a radio station in Accra said, performing at the Hollywood Bowl is the highest point of every artists’ career.
He mentioned the fact is that, the Hollywood Bowl is one of the most legendary venues in America and that you have not ‘arrived’ if you have not performed on the Hollywood Bowl stage.
“…decided to put together a big, huge concert at the Hollywood Bowl which is one of the most legendary venues in America. You haven’t arrived unless you play on Hollywood Bowl stage on those legend levels”.
He went on to explain how surreal it was for him to be on the legendary stage playing alongside one of the greatest songwriter, musician, and record producer in America, Stevland Hardaway Morris professionally known as Stevie Wonder. He said
“After I did my set obviously, it was over twenty thousand people in this like high-end thing. You know people on their feet everybody jumping and jumping and jumping and then when Stevie came on, he said that he was going to do Higher Ground he invited me… to come and join him on stage, I didn’t imagine joining Stevie Wonder on one of the most incredible, most prestigious stages in the world. I kept on pinching myself to see if this was real or it was all just a dream. “
He also added that he always feel humbled when he meets some of Ghana’s veteran singers like Nana Ampadu because that was one of his mum’s favorite artist. Therefore, he always accords them that level of respect.
Rocky Dawuni straddles the boundaries between Africa, the Caribbean, and the U.S to create an appealing sound that unites generations and cultures. With an easy-going charisma and reputation as a dedicated champion of social causes, Dawuni’s infectious grooves and dance-inducting anthem have consistently excited fans across the globe.
He has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Jason Mraz, Janelle Monae, and John Legend among many others. Named one of Africa’s Top 10 global stars by CNN, he has showcased his talent at prestigious venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and the Kennedy Center in Washington.
He produced his first album “The Movement” in 1996. This album was a major success in Ghana with several single hits such as “what Goes Round” and “Sugar”. Since then, he has released some albums which have brought him greater and wider recognition both in Ghana and around the world. He is considered one of Africa’s most recognized stars.
Dawuni has won so many awards and his album “Branches of The Same Tree” was nominated for a Grammy.
Not only is he an entertainer, but he doubles as an activist and has led in the fight of so many causes such as Guinea worm eradication, women’s health, and education, HIV advocacy, and many more.
